Oviedo is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monroe County. Oviedo was founded in 1887 and named for José Félix Oviedo y Valdés. The first post office opened in 1888. Oviedo's incorporation as a town occurred on November 4, 1893. On December 15, 1907, it became a city by act of the Florida Legislature after four years of struggle by its citizens. As the only incorporated city in Monroe County at that time, Oviedo had exclusive authority over all governmental matters within its borders save for those specifically exempted by statute from being governed by City ordinances or having their own police force separate from the Monroe County Sheriff's Department. In 1961, Oviedo annexes portions of unincorporated Stonington Township to form a new municipality which continues to be known as Oviedo Township today

Oviedo, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was founded in 1884 by the Oviedo family and it became an incorporated city in 1905. The population of Oviedo was 7,858 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern coast of Miami-Dade County and has a total area of just over 12 square miles (30 km2). The name "Oviedo" comes from two Spanish words: "ovir" meaning “to flow” and "edo," meaning “a place to dwell”. The name is also thought to be derived from the word "oyster," which means “place where fresh water resides”. In addition to its namesake river, Oviedo features several coastal bluffs that provide excellent views of both the Sea of Mexico and downtown Miami skyline. The history of Oviedo began with José Ortiz who purchased 1,000 acres (4 km2) of land near what is now downtown Oviedo on October 27, 1884 for $10 per acre ($2 per KM²). The first buildings were erected on this tract of land - a Methodist Episcopal Church, schoolhouse and barn - within weeks of Ortiz's purchase. This early settler community thrived due to its location between two major waterways - the Gulf Stream and St Lucie River - as well as its ample access to timber resources such as oak trees and cedar trees. Over time, other settlers arrived in droves – including brothers Lorenzo de la Vega y Valdés (1861-1927) and Manuel Ponce de León y Valdés (1862-1949), Sr., who purchased 1,500 acres (6 km2) adjacent to downtown Oviedo on November 3rd 1885 for $25 per acre ($3 per KM²). These men had come from Havana Cuba intent upon setting up a new home after escaping American occupation there during the Cuban Revolution in 1898. Over time they developed a ranching business which prospered until it was destroyed by fire in 1907; however their legacy continues today as one of Oviedo's most prominent families. On December 6th 1905, oviedoan incorporation occurred when Mayor Manuel Reyes Yanes signed legislation creating municipal government within boundaries set forth by then county Commissioner Basilio Baez Jr.. This inaugural act marked an important milestone for this developing community as it helped establishes mayoral authority for local elections to be held annually thereafter instead of being held biennially like those currently taking place throughout Miami-Dade County . In 1916 another important event took place when Sgt.-At-Arms John Fenton was killed while serving with Field Artillery Regiment #1 assigned to garrison Fort Lauderdale Beach againstSpanish forces during World War I; his death spawned one OFHRA veteran parade every year through downtown Olveston leading up right past Main Street into Fort Lauderdale beach
Oviedo, Florida was founded by a group of investors in 1885. The town became known as the "City of Progress" because it was a hub for new businesses and innovation. Oviedo also became a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful landscapes, rich history, and unique architecture. The city was eventually named after José de la Cruz y Valdés, the captain who led the Spanish expedition that discovered Florida in 1513.
