The first hotel in Ormond Beach was the Commodore Hotel which opened in 1893. After World War I, tourism started to decline due to Prohibition but began to grow again after repeal in 1920. During World War II, the USAAF built four airfields around Ormond Beach so that American pilots could fly missions over Japan during the war effort. One of these airstrips is still used today - Runway 5 at Orlando International Airport (IATA: ORD). In 1951, General Motors donated land adjacent to the shipyard for what would become GM’s new SouthFlorida Research Park. This research park helped improve automotive production in Tampa Bay while also exploring new technology fields such as electronic commerce and artificial intelligence (AI). In 1969, GM moved its headquarters from Flint Hills Arsenal near Kansas City, Missouri to SouthFlorida Research Park before finally moving its plant altogether to Pascagoula in 1984. On October 1st, 2006, GM announced that it would close its longtime manufacturing site at Pascagoula – bringing an end to more than sixty years of operations there – though this did not stop research activity or development at nearby Flounder Polymer Solutions company which continues until present day under another name.]]
Ormond Beach was founded in 1894 by Captain John Ormond and his brother, Capt. George Ormond. They were the first white settlers in the area. The town was named after the orchard that Captain Ormond built on the beach. The town grew quickly and by 1903, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1912, Captain Ormond died and his wife Maud moved to Ormond Beach with their children from Boston, MA. She ran a hotel there until her death in 1930. The town continued to grow and by 1944, it had a population of 3,000 people. By 1950, the town had reached its peak with 5,000 residents living in 178 homes. However, during the 1960s-1970s, the town experienced significant decline due to various factors such as high taxes and limited economic opportunities. By 1990, only about 500 people lived in Ormond Beach compared to 1,500 when it was first settled back in 1894
