Ormond Beach is a small town in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. Ormond Beach is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the eastern coast of Long Island Sound and is bordered by Sanford to the north and east, Lake Worth to the south, and Kissimmee to the west. The first pistol sights that were used on rifles were designed by Major General James Wilkinson in 1837. Wilkinson's pistols had three circles on one side of them that allowed shooters to aim while moving their barrels around because they could not see what they were shooting at. These pistols were called "broomstick sights." In 1849, Captain John Sibley developed a sight for rifles that he called "Sibley's Compound." This sight consisted of a ring with four circles that could be moved about so that shooters could aiming while moving their barrels around. Ormond Beach is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name Ormond Beach comes from the Indian word "oronda," meaning "place where men can bathe." This is because one of the first white people to settle in this area was Lorenzo de la Rionda, who arrived in 1795. He named his new community after his home country—Spain—in order to attract more settlers and trade goods with Spanish Florida. In 1835, Ormond Beach became a town and was incorporated as such by ordinance of the Palm Beach County Legislature. The first post office in Ormond Beach opened on October 24, 1892. The name change to its current form came about due to confusion over what localities had already been renamed Lake Worth and Boynton Beaches respectively since they were all located within palm beach county at that time. On May 15th, 1922 voters approved an amendment to the state constitution which changed school boundaries so that Ormond Beach would become part of South Miami-Dade School District #1 (later Broward County Schools). On November 1st of that year, school started for students in grades K-12 along with other newly created districts including Boca Raton (1945), Weston Park (1948), Kendall/West Kendall (1951), Plantation Key (1959) and NorthPort/North Port Creek Estates (1963). In 1964 when it merged into South Miami-Dade School District #2 it lost all its annexations so it remains one district today with only elementary schools open while high school is closed for renovation until 2021
