The CDP covers most of Ormond Beach north of US 1 and east of NW 12th Street. Ormond Beach started as a small fishing village on the mouth of the St Johns River in 1884. As more jobs moved out into newer areas throughout South Florida during the 1970s and 1980s Andros Maughan began purchasing large tracts of land along US 1 for what would become his "Maughan Residence" which continues to be one of Ormond Bays most popular tourist attractions today. In 1990 Maughan sold his property to developer Arthur Ashe who renamed it The Mirage Resort & Casino after his company's successful Atlantic City casino project in New Jersey which he also helped finance. In 2001 Mr. Ashe donated $100 million to build University Park Stadium which now includes several neighborhoods adjacent to campus including parts that once included Ormond Beach including Aventura and Hollywood Hills straddling US 1 just north of I-95 exit #81st Ave.). Since then much progress has been made on University Park Stadium such as completion in 2006of two new football stadiums - Raycom Stadium (home stadium for the University Panthers college football team)capacity 25,812 and Sun Life Stadium (home stadium for both American Express College baseball teams)capacity 43,030 - making it one of America's most modern collegiate stadiums while still maintaining its
