Ormond Beach was founded in 1892 by J.N. Ormond and his wife, Sarah. The original town is located on the north side of the present-day city of Ormond Beach, between U.S. 1 and County Road A1A. In 1915, the town was renamed for General Arthur MacArthur because he had donated land to establish it as a military post. The name change did not last long; in 1916, MacArthur's death caused the post to be closed down and all its personnel were reassigned to nearby Fort Myers. The first store in Ormond Beach was built on Main Street in 1895 by Elisha Sperry & Brothers. It served as a dry goods store until 1914 when it became a grocery store with an addition of a lunchroom and two floors of storage space. In 1922, the shop closed due to a lack of business and reopened as a general store under new management that year called G&M Merchants Incorporated which continued operations until 1945 when it merged with local grocer Wm Ladd’s Shop & Grocery Co., which became Piggly Wiggly Stores Incorporated after that company bought out G&M Merchants' assets In 1951, Piggly Wiggley Stores merged with Floridian Sales Corporation (FSC) which owned many small businesses throughout Florida including grocers such as Woolworths supermarkets and department stores like Sam’s Club warehouse clubs In 1957 FSC sold its interest in Piggly Wiggley Stores to several other companies including Allied Biscuit Holdings plc., Dunn Bros./Crown Candy Corp., Premier Brands Corporation (later Nabisco) among others In 1978 Allied Biscuit Holdings plc., Nabisco, Dunn Bros./Crown Candy Corp., Premier Brands Corporation (later Nabisco), among others united under one corporate banner to form Peanut Butter World Markets Incorporated which continued operations until 1984 when it merged with Jell-O Container Company Incorporation
