Ormond Beach is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It was founded by Major General John Stroud in 1827 as a military post on the Miami River. The community name is derived from Ormond Island, which lies within its boundaries. In 1941, Ormond Beach became an official U.S. Census town and it has since grown to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida with over 350,000 visitors annually. The city of Daytona Beach annexed Ormond Beach in 1964 and many businesses have left for the more vibrant city growth North Daytona but the cultural attraction of Ormond Beach still remains strong and well known throughout Florida The first knife made in or around Ormond Beach was probably a crude affair consisting of a couple of sharpened stones stuck into a piece of bark or wood and used as an axe-like weapon to cut bait or opossum hides such as those used by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in South Florida There are numerous references to knives being made in this area dating back to at least 1688 when James Cook discovered banana plants growing on Anacostia River near present day Arlington Mall . Cook had named the island Anacostia after his patron saint Anthony Xavier who had missions there . He also noted that bananas were not found anywhere else on Earth so he must have come across them whilst sailing downriver . This early discovery likely led to European settlers taking notice of this new fruit and soon thereafter there were references to knife making operations being set up along Anacostia River specifically A Dutchman by the name of Corneliszoon Brouwer established himself as a knife maker hereabouts about 1716-1718 AO (or possibly earlier) according to some sources Brouwer’s shop may have been located just east of what is now Ft Myers Boulevard on what is now Canal Street near US1/SR 437 today . He manufactured both single edged and double edged knives including slingshot type blades called “bouwerschijven” meaning “building pieces” He also produced various items related to hunting such as dogsledges, arrows, spear tips etcetera which can still be seen today at various locations within ORMOND BEACH ..… including DeLand Place Shopping Center where you can buy spears dating back over 100 years old !! Ormond Beach is a small town in southwestern Florida, and it has been inhabited by the same people for centuries. The area that is now Ormond Beach was first settled by Albinos, who were Native American. They built their homes on the peninsula that now forms Ormond Beach. In 1822, the government of Spain granted land to Captain José de Escobar y Mena, who named it San Carlos de la Vera Cruz. In 1868, another Spaniard, Vicente Báez y Cepeda, bought some of Escobar's land and renamed it Santa Rosa del Puerto de la Vega. In 1896, a group of English settlers purchased some of Báez's land and founded what would become Ormond Beach as an independent community. The community had its own school system and jail until 1933 when the state took over education in South Florida. In 1951-1954, Ormond Beach was home to the US Naval Air Station Great Lakes before it was moved to Miramar naval base in 2013-2015. As part of a larger reclamation project for Miramar Naval Base, many cellars and underground streets were dug into the sand dune which created an unusual feature for SouthFlorida: nearly two miles ofpless beachfront with no gates or barriers between private homes and public areas
