The post office was established in 1925 and quickly became one of South Floridas premier commercial centers; it remained so until 1959 when it merged with neighbouring PortMiami to form the current city of Miami-Dade. In 1840, General Winfield Scott established Fort Brown on an artificial island in Isla de la Bahía de las Palmas and built a house for his wife there. After American independence was won in 1776, Spain ceded control of Florida to America under the Treaty of Utrecht which ended Spain's rule over that territory. The treaty allocated this area along the Gulf of Mexico between Great Britain and France as part of Louisiana Territory and gave private individuals title to all land within two miles (3 km) of any seashore or waterway without compensation from either country.
