The town was founded in 1872 by Pritchett and Dunlap as a small community on the east side of Biscayne Bay. A post office operated in Ormond Beach from 1872 to 1925. Ormond Beach became an exclusive white community during the 1920s when it attracted American expatriates working for various companies ashore or offshore on Biscayne Bay and its tepid water supplies made it difficult for blacks to live near sea level without special permits from local planners who saw it as an opportunity for whites to own land near a black neighborhood without ceding political power to them. The international airport opened in 1959 adjacent totoday's beachfront shopping district and quickly became one of southern Florida's most important economic engines with jobs for locals and workers from nearby Miami and other areas; however, air travel began declining after Airlines AIG went public in 1997 hastening development along this stretch of coastline so that today much of Ormond Beach consists only of condos or vacation rentals while commercial development remains largely undeveloped except for two large apartment complexes built over Polynesian Dive restaurant which has been leased by Marriott Resorts World Golf Club since 2007 as their hotel complex called "Marriott/Ormond Beach". In 2000, voters approved a $100 million bond issue to improve infrastructure including roads, sewers, fire protection and schools within the coastal communities such as Okeechobee (then known as Port Everglades), Jacksonville Landing and Blufftonnette before voting yes on another referendum authorizing annexation by Broward County resulting in 3rd congressional district seat currently held by Rep.#27 Debbie Wasserman Schultz
