The history of gun lights in Ormond Beach, Florida began with the first handgun to be fired in the town on October 12, 1903. The gun was a .38 caliber revolver and it was used by Police Captain George Fenton to shoot at targets during a shooting competition. In 1924, the town council passed an ordinance that required all handguns sold in Ormond Beach must feature red light signals on both sides of the barrel. This law was repealed in 1960 but was reinstated as part of new firearm regulations in 1968. Since then, gun lights have become an important part ofOrmond Beach policing and security. Gun lights are often used to indicate when officers are making stops or conducting investigations. They also can be used as warning signs for other drivers when approaching intersections or traffic circles. Gun lights have been installed at various locations throughout Ormond Beach over the years including police substations, fire stations, municipal buildings and even a children’s playground. In 2016, officials announced plans to install a second gun light at the beachfront park in commemoration of 50 years since the original installation.

Ormond and his family traveled from Jacksonville to find a new home for themselves and their children after moving from their previous home in the city of Boca Raton. They decided on the island that sits off of Jupiter's Key because it had been abandoned by its previous inhabitants and looked promising for development. The townspeople were so impressed with theCaptain's decision to settle there that they adopted him and his family as their own as Boca Raton became an agricultural community instead of a residential one. The City of Ormond Beach grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to naval bases along Florida's Gulf Coast. Many servicemen made use of the beachfront homes which were available for rent or purchase at low prices due to wartime shortages of housing elsewhere in the state. After the war, many residents moved away from Ormund beach because they found no need for such an active waterfront community near military bases and other businesses in Brevard County while other areas experienced more growth during this time period including Daytona Beach which became Orange County after Florida gained its independence from Mexico on December 5, 1959
