Many families also kept small arsenals stocked with handguns just in case they needed them during prohibition raids or protests which could become bloody affairs! There are numerous evidence-filled stories about how guns played an integral role during prohibition here at Ormond Beach! Ormond Beach is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,698 at the 2010 census. Ormond Beach is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Ormond" comes from Old English ormán meaning "plain," and beach meaning "shore." People in that area were originally called the Beaches of Ormond because they could sunlight bathe on either side of the bay. The first permanent residents were some men who built a Cabin on Belle Isle in 1836 for themselves and their families. In 1840s settlers started arriving from Georgia and other parts of America with new land grants to settle in this area. In 1849, James Auld patented 4,572 acres (1 km2) of land east of Ormond Beach for $500 and named it after his brother-in-law Sir George Fairfax Ormsby who had been viceroy of India during the previous year. The first house on this tract was built by J P Gourlay about 1857; it still stands today as part of the Historic Palm House Museum complex on First Street near US 1A/SR 10A/US 29A/SR 8E). From 1861 to 1865, General John Custer fought at Bull Run Creek against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee; many artifacts from his service can still be found in nearby Fort Brooke Military Park including cannonballs and artillery projectiles dating back to that period. In 1893 a gas station was built across Third Street from present day Hialeah High School by Fenton Utley which became known as Utley's Gas Station until 1984 when it was closed down by Pensacola Electric & Water Co., Inc.. In 1957 Blanche Keyes married Governor Leslie Rector (a grandson of Commodore John Cushing) at her home there; he then donated all 6 acres (2 ha) northward along Third Street between Fourth Avenue N and Fifth Avenue NE to become Keyes State Park which includes an observation tower now used by Stone County Schools as a school bus stop en route to Pinecrest Elementary School located southbound on US 1A just past CR 205 dubbed "Keyes Tower". After years of discussion among local officials over whether or not to include Longboat Key within the park boundaries,[4] voters approved creating Ormond Beach State Park through referendum taking place December 5th, 1976 vote with 63% participation rating as one of Florida's most successful voter initiatives[5]. On October 25th, 1982 park commissioners voted 3-0 notifying all property owners adjacent thereto that their rights were terminated effective November 1st following passage by state legislators authorizing annexation into neighboring Monroe County due to its significant maritime resources[6][7] making keyed comprehensive with state parks adjoining its boundaries effective January 1st1993 leaving only longboat key unincorporated within state limits Although much litigation has ensued surrounding annexation claims variously totaling more than $40 million both before and after statehood [8], legal recognition has never been granted ultimately resulting in increased visitation rates for both county parks combined with less expensive boat dockage available both ashore and afloat[9][10]
