Ormond Beach became a town on May 1, 1914 when it was annexed byMiami. On January 18, 1938, it was annexed again by Miami and became an unincorporated community. The name "Ormond" came from two local businesses: Ormond House Paint Shop and Ormond Beach Chevrolet. Ormond Beach is located on Biscayne Bay between Homestead Key and Jupiter Key. Inaugurated in 1914 as an annexation of Miami by then-mayor Manuel Diaz Miranda, the surfacing of Biscayne Bay led to development along US 1A (now State Road 511) to the south with later annexation of other communities including Margate Village and Miracle Mile until its creation as an unincorporated community on January 18, 1938 by then-mayor James Pasternak Jr.. That year saw completion of what would become one of South Florida's most renowned shopping destinations – Ormond Beach's first department store – the Majestic Department Store which operated until 1984 when it closed after years of decline in patronage due to competition from South Florida's more popular shopping malls such as Mallory Square and Everglades Shopping Center nearby. With its well-maintained streetscapes complete with elaborately landscaped gardens fronting Gulf Breeze Boulevard and Anna Maria Boulevard (then called Dolphin Drive), Majestic quickly regained some popularity among locals for having one of South Floridians' only truly manicured neighborhoods outside Greater Tampa or Jacksonville; indeed much like their downtown counterpart throughout much of recent history – though not without its share of run-down storefronts that were steadily being replaced with new developments over time until finally succumbing to arson in 2016 The major thoroughfare running through Ormond Beach today once continued eastward towards Margate Village before turning northwest towards Miracle Mile prior to ending at US 1A near today's intersection with Anna Maria Boulevard just east of where Majestic now stands The original village had a post office (later renamed Park Avenue), library (later named Coral Gables), water system (later named Dolphin Drive), fire department (later renamed Margate Volunteer Fire Department) and jail/infirmary all housed within individual homes or businesses dating back to before World War I .
