Ormond Beach is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee– palms city metropolitan area. Ormond Beach has been inhabited by humans since Paleo-Indian times. A post office was established in 1903 and remained in operation until 1959. The first white person to reside in Ormond Beach was Elisha Postell, who settled there in 1853 with his wife and two children. Postell built a house on the site of what is now Grand Avenue and First Street. In 1860, Isaac Purdy moved from Stonington, Connecticut to Ormond Beach to take up a job as foreman on a shipbuilding company founded by his father-in-law, John Wetherbee. From here he started building wharves that would become one of the most important commercial waterways in Florida. In 1870 Charles Kapp moved from Jacksonville to Ormond Beach where he operated an ice cream factory and began buying land for development around his factory sites at First Avenue and Third Street NW (later renamed Kapp Boulevard). By 1875 Kapp had developed 10 acres (4 ha) south of downtown along Third Street NW; this became today's corner block of North Orange Avenue between First and Second Streets NE (renamed North Venetia Avenue after him). In 1881 he erected a large Italianate structure – now known as "the Kapp House" – at what is now Fourth Street NE which served as his headquarters for many years while he prosecuted lawsuits throughout Brevard County. Theodore Roosevelt visited Ormond Beach several times during 1893-1894 while serving as Ulysses S Grant's Vice Presidential running mate; during one visit Roosevelt stopped off at Kapp Boulevard where he sat down to have lunch with some local businessmen before continuing on to Osceola Park near Gainesville for dinner with General Omar Bradley later that day.(1) A new school district was formed in 1917 when Kissimmee Township split off fromBrevard County under state law following the passage of The Schooling Act of 1916(2). That year cash crops such as cotton were grown on reclamation land west of town Limits east of Lake Worth Road also used for peanuts.,cottonseed oil,,and other products becoming available due to hikes in prices caused by World War I production shortages.(3) After annexation by Kissimmee Township in 1922 Lands north east of town limits were annexed into Town limits forming today's eastern edge Of Ormond Beach including much What are now developments called Pinellas Park or Boca Raton originally just called Boca Norte or South Boca beach....Ormund Beaches original name was "Boca Raton."
