Ormond Beach is a small town in southern Florida, located on the state's Eastern Shore. It straddles the county line between Brevard and Broward counties. The population was 9,562 as of 2010. The Ormond Beach Naval Shipyard is an important economic development in the community. Ormond Beach was founded by Irish immigrants in 1867 as Foxboro Point. The name came from a bend in the bay where they could see the brigantine "Ormond" sailing enter and leave Fort Myers harbor. In 1904, the town was renamed for Admiral Arthur Orme (1798-1866), commander of U.S. Fleet at Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban War of 1898. The first post office opened in 1899, and was named for Rear Admiral John Fenton Orme (1814-1892). A great grandson of Rear Admiral Orme, Captian Charles Fenton Orme (1901-1978), served as Postmaster General of Florida from 1961 to 1973; he also directed construction of Jupiter High School which stands today onshore near Royal Palm Avenue., A severe storm hit Ormond Beach on October 10th 1921 that destroyed most buildings and killed twenty two people including nine children aged six to eleven years old who were playing inside their homes on Main Street when it struck. It continued pounding through town for hours before finally dissipating about two miles away just after midnight local time behind Miami Harbor lighthouse according to one report . Another account says it lasted all day long before finally dying over shore near Fort Myers Boulevard near US 1 . The following year another severe storm struck that destroyed everything but caused no fatalities .. Although no such tornado event has been reported since then there has been occasional reports of high winds causing extensive damage across much or all Brevard County during this time period .. By 1930 only 4%of homes were still standing with majority having been rebuilt or replaced by new structures.. Thereafter many residents left either because housing prices had skyrocketed or they found other places to live whileBrevard County struggled with heavy debt loads brought on by World War II military spending Accordingly Foxboro Point reverted back to its original name - Ormond Beach - when it incorporated as a village in 1934 under State law authorized by Legislature #1 thru #8 which created Village Affairs Councils with powers similar to those currently enjoyed by cities & towns throughout Florida .. In 1938 our civic leaders voted unanimously not to annex neighboring unincorporated communities Pinellas Park & Riviera Beach which had done so successfully less than two years earlier ...... Our current Mayoralty form dated Jan 20th 2018 does not include any reference to annexation however .... After more than sixty years without annexation we may now be about to become reclusive again ........ annexation would have given us even more power, resources and independence but instead we are committed to continuing our unique culture
