Orlando, Florida is a city located in Orange County on the east coast of Florida. It was founded in 1835 by Increase Orlando, who named it for his brother, John C. Orlando. The population of Orlando proper was 1,848 in 1900 and 3,039 by 1990. In 1997, it became the fastest-growing city in Florida with an increase of 23%. Today, Orlando ranks 10th among U.S. cities with a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $127 billion as of 2017[1]. The first settlers to Orange County were white families from South Carolina and Georgia who arrived during the 1830s and 1840s seeking land grants that would include some part of what is now Orlando. When they could not get the grants they wanted they started looking for other areas to settle because they knew that if they did not come to Orange County there would be no chance for them to make money from their land holdings. One possibility was East Coast corruption which had increased since Andrew Jackson's presidency due to his efforts to open up new lands to settlement east of the Mississippi River. Another reason why these early settlers didn't come to Orlando was because there were already towns and villages established throughout Orange County - such as Winter Garden [2], Maitland [3], Sanford [4], Altamonte Springs [5], Lake Buena Vista [6] - all with more people than needed for a town or village status quo at that time. In 1835 Increase Orlando decided upon making Ormond Beach his new home after traveling through several Jacksonville locations.[7] He purchased 400 acres (18 hectares) outside Jacksonville on Longboat Key near where he later built his vacation home called "O'Hara's Villa" today known as Walt Disney World Resort[8]. Orlando grew rapidly due in part to its location within easy commuting distance both northward into Seminole County and southward into Duval County; both counties had large amounts of undeveloped land available for development at this time[9]. The growth also came about thanks especially to two factors: Methodist missionaries began arriving here in the late 1800s preaching Christianity while also helping develop citrus farming; and railroad construction arrived here during this time which made transportation easier then ever before allowing goods and passengers throughout central Florida access without having to go out west or down south[10]. By 1890 Ormond Beach had grown so much that it warranted its own incorporation as a borough within Jacksonville – something which happened just three years later on November 6th,[11][12] 1870 under charter No 2160 from Mayor Jno Henson (later renamed De Witt Clinton)[13][14][15]). A few decades later orange groves became one of downtown Ormond Beach’s most distinguishing features while businesses such as hotels, groceries stores, post office etc mushroomed quickly along State Road 436 until 1925 when an expressway cut off their access creating what is now Peachtree Center Drive business park nearby today). This fast growth can be partially attributed either directly or indirectly to Interstate 4 Commission chairman Driggs Polk’s vision for I-4 corridor expansion through Central Florida – see also Polk Plan article below for more details). Polk envisioned connecting Kissimmee/Orlando International Airport with Tampa/St Petersburg International Airport thus creating what we know today as “I-4 Corridor Streetscape Development” area encompassing downtown Daytona Beach/Melbourne Lakes Ocala Bay Areaand much beyond including many high rise buildings still standing today like Biltmore Estate Hotel & Spa .
