This also led to an increase in crime as criminals could easily gain access to these important resources. To help address this issue, local leaders created a public works district that built roads and bridges; constructed schools; installed streetlights; formed water companies; and provided other services such as utilities or trash collection. Additionally, they established a police department which helped reduce crime rates within the community while also providing security for residents during peak hours. In 1925, Opalocka became one of twenty-six townships within the newly created Leon County government when it was separated from Holmes Beach Township due east of Lake Okeechobee into its own municipality under the name of "Opa Locka". It had a total population of 153,815 in 2010 according to the US Census Bureau estimate*, making it one of Florida's fastest-growing cities over that period.* As such, it has frequently been called "the most Americanized city in South Florida."* The name "Opalock" is thought to come from an incident which took place near where Opalock Creek flows into Biscayne Bay: A group of men were fishing when they caught some opal shells which they used as trophies* * According to one account*, local tribesman found an area around present day Ocala where shells were being found with patterns that could only be explained by someone having used a set amount of opals each day*. After studying these shells further, they determined that there must be another river nearby with this same pattern – hence “Opalock” came about! Opa Locka is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 37,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Opa Locka is on U.S. Route 301 and Interstate 95 north of Jacksonville and south of Tampa. The city was founded in 1923 by Opa Locka citizens Colonel George Hunt and Mrs. Elsie Robertson Hunt, who named it for their father-in-law's farm, "Opa Loca". The first store in town was opened by Wm Fuhrman & Sons grocery store on Orange Avenue in 1924; the business closed in 1961 due to competition from Walmart. In 1951, the Army Corps of Engineers began construction of an armory and storage complex on land now occupied by Trinity University Park (now Opalocka Lake). The corps built a three story brick building that still stands today as the Mother Hubbard School Annex Building located at 411 E Main Street (). After several years of construction, the Army Corps completed its project and donated the property to Opa Locka city government for use as a public park;Opalocka Park was dedicated on July 10th, 1957 (). In 1971 when Interstate 95 became I-95/U.S. 301 east of Jacksonville it changed its name to what it remains today – I-95/U.S. 301 Boulevard – just south of downtown Jacksonville proper within City limits – making Opalockaa one stop away from all things Jacksonvilleian! In 1984 Phase II of US 9 became available through Turnpike Extension Project connecting I-95 with US 301 just North of downtown Jacksonville proper within City Limits; this made access to businesses just minutes away from everyone living or working Downtown!
