In 1915 Captain Pritchard donated an additional acreage to form what would become today's south side of town which included modern day Walmart Boulevard; this parcel also remains property of WalMart Incorporated today. Opalocka Creek flows through Opa Locka and has been used as a source of irrigation for many years. The creek was named for General James Opalocka by Major General John Eaton in 1827 when he surveyed the area around present-day Opa Locka. At one time it was thought that Opalocka Creek was also the name of an Indian tribe because its banks were lined with opals (an excavation tool). The first European to visit Opalocka Creek was Captain Alonso de Salazar on September 2, 1565 when he landed at Key West on his way from Havana to Spain. He named the creek "Creek of the Indians" after his guide Tecumseh and some other members of his party who accompanied him during his exploration of what is now south Florida. In 1838, Governor Carlos Bueso ordered Colonel James Loyd to build a road from Tampa to St Augustine which would connect Tampa with Jacksonville and Mobile Bay through Opalockas River valley; this road became known as Loyd Road or King's Highway. In 1844 Colonel Charles Ewing built a mill near present day downtown Opaloca on Clearwater River east of US 1A/SR 441 which manufacturing goods such as flour, cottonseed oil, cheese and shoes until it closed in 1916 due to competition from local mills operated by white capitalists; today only evidence remains of the mill site including foundations and remnants of coursed bricks laid down during boom times in 1917-1918 which are still being counted today by archaeologists as part ofDefining Heritage Sites within Everglades National Park located near where I-95 crossed SR 441 just east of downtown Opa lockaa
