The name "Opa Locka" means "mouth of a stream." The first people to settle in what is now Opa Locka were Indian traders who came down the Everglades River from Fort Myers in 1824. In 1829, Captain Edward Bowen founded the town on land he purchased from Osceola Indians near present day Pompano Beach. On November 17, 1830, Opa Locka was incorporated as a village under the name of Port St John with James Henson as its first Mayor and A.H. Payne as its first Postmaster General In 1847, Fayetteville and Jacksonville took over responsibility for Opalocka Village and made it an official part of their respective counties; this left Opalocka effectively unincorporated until 1959 when it became an independent municipality again under charter granted by then-County Judge Wojciech Jaroslawiak A post office called "Opa Loca" was established at Opalocka on October 15, 1848 by Amos Kendall with the prefix "OG" to indicate that it was located on US 1 east of US 95 south (the present day I-95 corridor). The original mail service stopped at Boca Raton some time prior to September 1861 due to postal reform which eliminated certain classifications of letters such as ditto (an abbreviation for duplicate), before moving upstate to Orlando where new facilities were built On July 8, 1865 local architect Cesar Chavez donated his design for what would become Municipal Hall which replaced Captain Bowen's original cabin used for storage during construction OPA also erected a large white picket fence around City Park giving birth symbolically to future founder Drifting Sands Casino Resort & Spa international location across Uptown South Miami - one block away from our current BBVA Compass Stadium complex!
Opa Locka was founded in 1892 by John Opa and Anna Locka. The town was named for the lock on the Intracoastal Waterway that facilitated shipping between Miami and Tampa. It began as a small agricultural community with few businesses. By 1912, it had a population of 100 people and two hotels. In 1915, Opa Locka became part of the City of Miami and experienced rapid growth due to its location near the Port of Miami and access to Interstate 95. The city's first commercial development was a shopping center called Parkhurst which opened in 1927. In 1961, when Miami Beach became an incorporated city, Opa Locka lost its charter status but continued to grow economically until it joined the city in 2006.
