Opa Locka's history can be traced back to the early 1800s when Indian traders traveled through the area on their way to Tampa Bay. One of these traders, named John Wesley Powell, stopped at what is now known as Powell's Landing on September 16th, 1824. He had come across a village called Hernando de Soto's Village which he named "Opalocka." The first written mention of Opalocka occurs in 1830 when Augustus De Witt wrote about it in his book A Voyage Round America. At this time there were only a few settlements located near what is now Opalockas Beach. In 1853, Jno Elishawn King founded an agricultural colony known as Gainesville on what is now Gulf Breeze Boulevard. This colony was soon abandoned because of problems with malaria and other diseases caused by mosquitoes. By 1870 Gainesville had become an important center for cotton production due to its location between Mobile Bay and Tampa Bay. The town gradually declined until it was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1998. The town of Opalocka began growing up around it after it was reestablished as a municipality in 1984 following the destruction of Gainesville. Today, Opalocka has over 100 businesses employing over 400 people and offers a variety of services including health care, transportation, college education and more. The municipality also leads OPALOCKA COUNTY'S effort to recycle materials from local businesses into new products!

Opa Locka, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Opa Locka was first settled by Seminole Indians in 1819. The name "Opa Loka" means "headquarters." The town site was donated to the town by Major John Pritchard in 1892. In 1915, Opa Locka received its charter from the Florida State Legislature and became an incorporated municipality. In 1942, during World War II, General George Silliman set up Camp Pickett on what is now College Boulevard in Opa Locka as a training camp for air forces personnel stationed in Tampa Bay. This community had small businesses and homes made into army barracks and other use until it closed in 1945 when the war ended. The post-war boom for Opa Locka began with the opening of two large shopping malls: one called Gulf Coast Mall (opened 1959) and another called Town Center mall (opened 1984). These anchors drew shoppers from nearby St Petersburg and Clearwater Beach; as well as Interstate 4 looping through central Pinellas County farmland used for agricultural production before then becoming urban areas. Most importantly however was housing development which mushroomed after World War II due to military surplus land available statewide at low prices following America's entry into World War II without any nationally mandated controls over values or production levels like those that were put into place during peacetime periods preceding America's entry into war). Opa Locka, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,633 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Opa Locka was founded on December 16, 1959 by Rear Admiral Cecil "Cec" Boren and his wife Loretta. The Boren family – Cecil's father, Rear Admiral James H. Boren (1877-1959), mother Loretta (née Philips) – came to America from Ireland in 1911 and first settled in Tampa before moving to Fort Myers in 1917. They started a small grocery store there and eventually acquired an auto dealership and other businesses around the intersection of Northwest Second Street and Northwest Third Avenue which they called "The Gables." In 1951 they moved their business to what is now known as 5th Avenue Northeast near South Beach Boulevard and began to build what would become Opa Locka into a town with its own fire Department, library, post office, high school (which opened in 1950), police department, water system (opened in 1949), golf course (opened in 1948), restaurant/bar(s) (opened 1946-1949) and shopping center anchored by Sears & Roebuck Incorporated's flagship store until that company's bankruptcy forced the closure of most of these businesses during the early 1990s despite efforts by local civic groups to keep them open; today many of these buildings still stand derelict but are also popular tourist destinations for relic seekers because of their historical significance. In recent years much development has occurred within Opa Locka proper as well: new housing developments have been built along Northwest Fourth Street NE; an interstate exit has been constructed connecting OpaLocka with nearby Lauderdale Lakes; retail chains such as Walmart Super Center have opened stores within walking distance of downtown while Applebee's received approval from City Council to open a full-service restaurant inside the old Post Office building on Southwest First Street NE; several large private universities or colleges have established themselves within reach of downtown residents through research campuses or medical schools while still others including Pizza Hut - one of only two restaurants allowed per campus - have relocated outside city limits altogether. Opa Locka was founded in 1947 by three men who pooled their money to start a dry goods store. The store was the first on the block and it quickly became one of the most popular places to buy groceries in Opa Locka. The store closed in 1978 but reopened in 1984 as a full-service grocery store with more than 100 items. In 1992, the store moved to its current location and continues to be one of the most popular stores in Opa Locka.
