The history of Opa Locka, Florida's gun target industry dates back to the early days of this community. From 1892 until 1949, Opa Locka was home to one of the most important gun target ranges in the Southeast. The range operated out of a former cotton gin on Southeastern Boulevard and featured targets such as artillery projectiles and handguns. In 1949, whenOpalocka's original municipal government merged with neighboring cities, the city-owned range was sold to a group of local businessmen. The new owners made alterations to the property, adding a large shooting gallery and creating an indoor rifle range for use by hunters. TheGun Target Industry Association (GTI) was born from this partnership, and over time it grew into one of the largest target industries in Florida. Today, GTI membership includes more than 400 businesses across Sarasota County that offer targets online or in physical locations around town. Gun enthusiasts from all over come to shoot at our ranges each year, participate in tournaments organized by GTI or simply take part in fun events like "Shooting Saturday" at our outdoor ranges!
Opa Locka, Florida is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida and covers a area of 5.4 square miles. The population of Opa Locka was 362 as of the 2010 census and is expected to grow to 4,000 by 2020. Opa Locka's economy revolves around manufacturing and agriculture. Opa Locka was founded in 1930 by Phillip Ladd and his brothers-in-law Harry Glidden and Clyde Withers. They set up a small cotton gin on what is now US 231 near the present day intersection of US 231 Business Street and Runnymede Road. By 1933 they had attracted some investors led by Dr. Averill Harriman who purchased the land for $1,500 from Ladd’s father-in-law John Sisson. It wasn’t until 1940 when the Ladd family sold their interest in the business to Dragan Ilicic who operated it as Ilicic Cotton Gin & Mill until it closed in 1984 due to bankruptcy. In 1954, after years of negotiation with local farmers, Congress passed the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA). This act provided financial aid for farmers in need through an auction system that allowed buyers to pay higher prices for production commodities than those available at market prices. As a result of this legislation, more acres were devoted to cotton farming than ever before in Miami-Dade County

Opa Locka was founded in 1925 by immigrants from India as a small town on the banks of the Stono River. In 1957 it became an incorporated city and in 1992 it merged with nearby Boca Raton to form one large municipality. The Stono River forms part of the boundary between Opa Locka and Boca Raton. The name comes from "opaque" (meaning "thick") because of its opacity when milk was being poured over it to make butter or yogurt for local merchants. Today, Opa Locka has several businesses that produce this type of product such as Dairy Queen and Gatorade Corporation, both located on West Buena Vista Boulevard near Northwest First Street. Other industries that have thrived in recent years include computer services, software development and manufacturing; defense contractor Raytheon; health care provider Memorial Hermann Health System; real estate developer John Hancock who built many high-end homes throughout Opa Locka; and telecommunications provider Comcast Cablevision which has its corporate headquarters in downtown Opa Lockan
