Opa Locka is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 67,878 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County and has been the location of both Opa Locka and Cutler Bay townships since 1871. The area now known as Opa Locka was first settled by Seminole Indian tribes in the early 1800s. In 1871, two settlers named John A. Cutler and James Witherspoon purchased from the Seminoles a tract of land that included present-day Opa Locka. The city of Opalocka was founded on April 6, 1912 when residents of Cutler Bay township voted to unite with their sister town of Ocala to form a municipality. On January 1, 1913, all municipalities were merged into one with the name "Opa Locka". The original City Hall building still stands today within the boundaries of current day City Hall Park in downtown Opalocka. In 1963, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa ordered that all public schools be closed due to budget cuts; this led to an outgrowth called "No School Day" which lasted for several years until 1972 when school reopening became an official event under Mayor Carlos Gimenez's administration. In 1998 – after more than 20 years without any major changes – voters approved adding Cutler Bay back onto the municipal map through a referendum process which resulted in annexation by the city proper (the vote happened days before then-mayor Manny Diaz announced he would not seek re-election). On November 5th, 2007 Hurricane Katrina made landfall onshore near Opalocka as a Category 4 storm with winds up to 155 mph (248 km/h). Outraged residents throughout Greater Miami mobilized for cleanup efforts immediately following Katrina - including setting up roadblocks around downtown Opalockas Business District late on October 29th just prior to landfall so that businesses could reopen while they awaited rescue assistance; this action helped spark what would become known as "Operation Save Our Schools." More than $120 million was raised during clean-up operations alone - more than any other municipality in either state or country during Katrina's aftermath. On December 11th hurricane Georges struck Haiti leaving much destruction but no reports of human fatalities; many people living close to Haiti did not know about what had occurred because satellite imagery stopped working soon after landfall due power outages began reaching parts of Haiti

Opa Locka, Florida is a town located in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Opa Locka is named for Samuel Opalock, who donated land to the community in 1922. The first recorded visit to what is now Opa Locka was by Captain John Stroud and his squadron of pirates on December 7, 1795. They were looking for new ground to raid on the island of Cuba and were met with hostility from the local natives which resulted in one pirate being killed and three captured while exploring the island. In 1824 Samuel Opalock donated 3 acres (1 km²) of land to be used as a town site in Pinellas County by donation alone without any other contribution from anyone else. This gave rise to an early history of cooperation between different groups within and outside of Opa Locka itself including neighboring towns such as Clearwater and Dunedin where residents would work together on projects such as clearing land or building roads shared by all four municipalities. The first permanent settler arrived in 1828 when James Pritchett arrived from England with his family after escaping British captivity during the Napoleonic Wars. He built a home called "Pinecrest" on what is now State Road 56 east of downtown Opa Locka which served as his headquarters until 1830 when he sold it to General James Wilkinson who renamed it "Wilkinson's Hotel". During Reconstruction following the Civil War many African Americans moved into Pinellas County seeking freedom and opportunity following reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln under which most white citizens fled southward into Confederate territory while African Americans continued northward into Union territory. This influx of black people caused some friction within local communities with some locals accusing those newly arrived Africans of competing too hard for available jobs and housing opportunities while others tried toWelcome them based upon their cultural similarities rather than racial differences. In response a group known formally as "The Citizens' Committee for educational improvement" was formed in 1865 consisting mostly white men along with several black men including future Mayor Harry Burnett who had been active in secret organizing efforts during Reconstruction years before that Deputy Sheriff Amos Brown joined forces with them forming an effort dubbed The Negro League which later became known as The Miami Canaries
