Opa Locka, Florida is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Opalocka Creek forms the city's eastern border and runs through its center. Opalocka Park is one of Jacksonville's largest parks and features a water park, an indoor/outdoor pool and a basketball court. The creek also provides drinking water to many homes in Opalocka Township and parts of Lacrosse Borough. The first European settlement in what is now Opalocka Township was made on October 7, 1827 by Akins Wm., Sr., with others from Stonington (now part of Jacksonville) for the purpose of exploring this new country which had been discovered by Captn John Dupleix during his voyage under command of Commodore James Cook on June 13th 1825 while attempting to circumnavigate America. This land was lying east of the Altamaha River then known as "Ponce de Leon Land." Captain Cook named it after Antonio Ponce de Leon who explored this area in 1514 when he sailed southwestward along Florida's coast looking for a route to India via East Asia or South China Sea. He finally arrived at Key Largo on November 10th 1504 having traveled over 350 miles (560 km). In 1827 Mr Akins purchased 300 acres (121 ha) adjacent to Captain Cook's original purchase from Nicholas Lowrey for $50 per acre ($2 4/acre). Opa Locka is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Opa Locka was founded in 1907 by Norwegian immigrants as "Opa Loka". In 1911, the name was changed to "Opalocka" after a local creek that runs through town. In 1922, Opalocka became an independent municipality and adopted its present name. The city's first mayor was A.L. Yarborough and its first female Mayor Mrs. Florence Epps-Blakey in 1923. The Opalocka steel mill closed in 1962 but reopened in 1970 as Homestead Steel Works with a new plant on Northside Drive near Interstate 275/275E which produced American made furnace parts until it closed again in 1998 due to bankruptcy of Homestead Steel Works parent company American Foundry Corporation.. In 1984, construction began on the now defunct Citrus Park Shopping Center which served as both a mall and home for Opalocka's only golf course until it opened in 1990 when Clearwater Hills Mall took over that role.. In 2001, Citrus Park Shopping Center underwent renovations which included the installation of Ford's dealership - one of only two such locations within Citrus Park - as well as other large retailers such as Sears and JCPenney.. After years of planning and many millions of dollars spent by several private developers and taxpayers alike, City Hall announced plans to redevelop Citrus Park into "Aquariums Parkway", including an aquarium complex featuring more than 200 exhibits covering all aspects of aquatic life from plankton to coral; a movie theater; office space; and homes for up to 100 families with children under 16 living inside the park itself rather than on adjoining streets or close to schools.. The Aquariums Parkway project faced significant opposition from some residents who saw it as another example of development going against what they felt were good public policy goals for their community such as creating public open spaces etc... However following intense public pressure culminating with Mayor Beverly Davenport announcing her support for Aquariums Parkway late last year, most residents have come around to supporting the plan despite some still nursing grievances about how it will be funded (e.g., no representation from developers within City Hall) ..
