In 1839, General Antonio López de Santa Anna established Fort Santiago to protect what became known as the "Land of Ojos Negros". Santa Anna's men built a levee around present day Opa Locka and built a station on it for their supplies and troops. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down Fort Santiago after Mobile Bay was captured by Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. This event helped to start Opa Locka's growth as a military base and commercial center for Southwest Florida. After the war ended, many African Americans settled in Opa Locka from Plantation counties east of Tampa due to Reconstruction efforts following the war. They began working on farms and plantations until they were able to buy their own land in the late 19th century when white farmers got tired of having to sharecropper their crops with black laborers

Opa Locka, Florida is located in Palm Beach County, Florida. It was founded in 1879 by Captain James Opa and his wife Sarah. The town became a census-designated place (CDP) on July 1, 1987. As of the 2010 census, the population of Opa Locka was 97,714. The town is named forCaptain James Opa who settled there in 1879. The first store in town opened on May 15th of that year and operated under the name "Gainesville". By 1886, Gainesville had two stores and five residents. On October 3rd of that year, Captian James Opa sold all his land to JF Bogue who built a post office and store called "Opa Locka". In 1905 Fenton Smith opened what is now known as Robert's Lounge which served as the first regular grocery store in Opa Locka. By 1912 there were six businesses with a population of 17 people including three restaurants: Mrs Miller's Restaurant (now known as Donnybrook), Red Lobster restaurant and the OPAL gas station/barbecue joint which still stands today at 521 S Orange Blossom Trail. On December 31st 1915 an engine failure resulted in a fire that destroyed most of Gainesville leaving only one building standing; Captain James' Store which continued to trade until 1927 when it closed because it was unable to compete with larger chains like Safeway or Kroger who had open stores at this time throughout much of South Florida In 1951 Raymond Hoyle started construction on what is now known as Southern University campus where he would laterfound Suncoast University In 1958 First Baptist Church moved from its original location three blocks east along US1 to become home to both Southern University’s School Of Business Administration & Food Science Department before becoming again a church after Opal High School closed its doors for lack of students . That same year another fire destroyed most buildings on US1 near State Road A1A destroying both male dormitories at Southern University along with numerous homes . One must remember that during those days almost everything was owned by either individuals or large institutions so fires really didn’t cause too many problems back then
