In 1915 the first post office was opened in Opa Locka with three mailboxes; Mrs. Hennessey served as Postmistress until her death in 1927 In 1951, Opa Locka became an incorporated town when its boundaries were changed to coincide with those of Pinellas County; at that time it had a population of 19,994 people In 1959, a new shopping center was built nears downtown along State Road 892 which became known as "The Loop" after then Mayor Harry Payne Whitney developed it into what it remains today: a large open-air mall with more than 200 stores including department stores Sears and JCPenney., major motion pictures studios such as MGM/MGM Grand and Universal Studios Hollywood (the second largest film theater complex east of Los Angeles), restaurants such as Ruby Tuesday's (now Ruby Diner), beauty supply stores including Bobbi Brown & Co., L'Oréal Parismetics Inc., Chanel No 5 Oud Perfume House etc.; educational institutions including Stonington Elementary School (grades PreK through 12th), Clearwater Catholic High School (grades 9–12th), Hillsborough Community College and Redevelopment Authority Community College which offer evening classes or short courses Bahia de Fogo Island Demolition Project - A demolition project conducted to remove buildings within City Limits which have outlived their usefulness due to various factors such as fire hazards etc.—and 20 businesses/cafes operated by local merchants inside or outside The Loop All told there were over 1,600 businesses operating inside or outside Of The Loop when it ceased operation in 1984 because most operations moved away from centralized locations following deregulation of local business practices . Today there are only about 100 businesses still located inside City Limits although much redevelopment has taken place throughout Downtown making it one of highest concentrations of commercial activity anywhere within City limits outside Tampa Bay Area

The area now known as Opa Locka was originally called "Coconut Grove." It was founded by Captain James Opalock and his family in 1868 as a small plantation on Holmwood Plantation. The first store in Opa Locka opened in 1870 and the first school in 1871. In 1902, Captain Opalock donated land to create what would become the City of Opa Locka. In 1955, two brothers—Richard and Roy Klinkenberg—founded Citrus Bowl Stadium which became one of the most successful bowl games played in America. Citrus Bowl Stadium has been used for both football and baseball tournaments since its inception. The stadium also houses a variety of businesses such as JBL Sports Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., Ford Motor Company's Stinger Motorsports Complex, Chevrolet Ram Trucks & Equipment dealership, RSL Soccer Club and several restaurants including Carl's Jr., Hardee's Restaurants and Sonic Drive-In Park Place Grill
