Olds in 1881 as a result of his purchase of land east of the Stonington Canal. The name "Oldsmar" comes from the Spanish word "oldsmarch", meaning "to go down to the sea." The first post office in Oldsmar was established in 1884. In 1907, Oldsmar became one of two cities in Palm Beach County when it was annexed by Broward County. As part of its annexation process, Oldsmar also gained city rights and began to operate as its own municipality with its own police and fire departments. In 1966, Oldsmar became an unincorporated community within Palm Beach County and has since been completely surrounded by Palm Beach Township ever since. Today, there are only a few scattered dwellings left standing in the once thriving town center which was once home to over 2,500 residents before it went through major redevelopment during the late 1990's/early 2000's under local control as part of efforts to revitalize and clean up what had become a troubled area full of crime and blight.
