The history of Oldsmar, Florida began with the establishment of a small town in 1882. The town was named after J.D. Olds, who donated land to the town and donated $1,000 to help start the town's first business. In 1906, Oldsmar became one of the towns in Seminole County. In 1959, Seminole County merged into Tallahassee County and Oldsmar became part of that county. On July 1, 1962, Oldsmar was incorporated as a city and became one of the cities in Tallahassee County.
Oldsmar, Florida is a town located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 9,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of what is now Oldsmar were Creek Indians who lived near Lake Okeechobee and hunted deer and other game. In 1821, Colonel James Wilkinson founded Wilkinson's Plantation on the east side of present-day Oldsmar Boulevard and Railroad Avenue about one mile from today's post office. On July 3, 1824, Wilkinson sold 1/4 acre (0.20 hectare) of land to Jno. A. Richardson for $325 cash only. Richardson built a small cabin on this site which he named "Richardson's Cabin". He later renamed it "Oldsmar" after his plantation inwestern Virginia where he had been born in 1785 as John Allen Oldham III . In 1826, Jacksonville developer George Pritchard bought 1/4 acre (0.20 hectare) of land from Richardson for $225 cash only; Pritchard built a small house there which he called "Pritchard's House". He later renamed it "Oldsmar" after his plantation in western Virginia where he had been born in 1785 as George Pocock Oldham IV On May 21, 1830, Jupiter Pettit purchased 2/3 acres (1 hectare) of land from Pritchard for $350 cash only; Pettit built a small cabin there which he called "Pettit's Cabin". He later renamed it "Oldsmar" after his plantation in western Virginia where he had been born in 1785 as Jabez Pettit IV In 1835, James Hickey purchased 1/4 acre (0.20 hectare) of land from Pettit for $175 cash only; Hickey built a small cabin there which he called "Hickey's Cabin". Oldsmar, Florida is a small town located in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. It was founded by John Olds and his family on a tract of land that they purchased from the Creek Nation in 1836. The Oldsmar post office opened in 1837, and the first store was built in 1838. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location on the channel between Tampa Bay and Jupiter Bay. In 1881, Oldsmar became a city when it amalgamated with neighboring Saint Petersburg. By 1910, however, the population had dwindled to around 1,000 residents because of development near the community along State Road 710. However, following World War II there was an increased demand for housing within Oldsmar because of its proximity to military bases throughout Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. By 1970, only 100 people lived in Oldsmar; however this number grew to over 200 by 2000 due to new development around thetown center as well as new businesses opening up in nearby communities such as Neptune Beach and Bradenton Beach. Today, Oldsmar is one of the most vibrant towns in Sarasota County with active commerce and cultural amenities available throughout its vibrant downtown area as well as several secondary commercial areas including several restaurants/cafés/bars as well as two large parks - One designed specifically for golfing (the Pete Ricketts Park) and one that hosts events such as concerts and car shows (the New Holland Park). The Town also has two high schools - North Central High School which serves students from grades 9-12 while South Central High School provides opportunities for students from grades 11 through 12 - both of which are classified among "A" grade schools according to state requirements.
