The present-day Red Dot sight company was founded in Oldsmar, Florida in 1949. The original founder of the company was a Mr. John Oldsmar and his wife Mrs. Maeve Oldsmar. The business commenced operations with a single rifle, the Ruger Model 10/22 Rifle, which they sold exclusively to law enforcement officers and veteran military personnel throughout the state of Florida.
Oldsmar, Florida is a town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,057 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Sarasota County was José María Narváez on February 13, 1795 when he and some companions sailed from Havana on the "San Francisco". On his journey he discovered a tract of land lying south of where today's Sarasota County stands and named it after himself: Santa Rosa de Osa y la Bahia de Oldsmar (Oldsmar Bay). The area became part of Escambia County on March 4, 1821. In 1868 an act was passed by the Florida Legislature which changed Escambia County into Sarasota County with its current boundaries. Oldsmar was platted as a town on October 11, 1870 by Jno Sheppard and others under the name of "New Tampa" after Tampa Bay got its present name from Tallahassee (then Spanish for "Tampa"). It soon outgrew New Tampa so much that it reverted to its original name in 1877 when it merged with neighboring Port Charlotte to become one municipality - Oldsmar. The merger didn't go well with residents who wanted their own city separate from their larger neighbor - so they successfully lobbied for a referendum which returned them to their previous independent status effective November 1, 1880. The city's growth continued unabated until World War II when most citizens withdrew because they were opposed to military involvement in Europe which located nearby Fort Myers Beach within easy artillery range. However, many locals came back during the war due to established jobs available here as munitions plants were developed at nearby Clearwater Naval Baseoise Naval Air Station and Plant #1 near St Petersburg; these manufacturing jobs lured many more people back home once hostilities ended 1945 than did returning servicemen from Europe who had no place else to go! On September 25th 1949 elections were held for municipal office holders with Mayor Harry Ransom being elected unopposed; Businessman/ Entrepreneur Leroy Hinson also won election as Collector/Sheriff while Treasurer Arthur Akins took care of all financial matters not regulated by state law. These early days saw an aggressive expansion program waged by Mayor Ransom including new housing developments such as Westbrook Village and Neptune Bottom just outside old downtown; this type of development would continue throughout most of the decade while downtown slowly began TO decay culminating in fire damage control measures put into effect in 1978 following another major hurricane which caused extensive damage both inside and outside Oldsmar limits; fortunately no lives were ever lost however $2 million worth of property damage occurred! Former mayor Harry Ransom died suddenly on December 15th 2002 only weeks before term expiration making Larry King Jr., his successor resulting in a three-year mayoral campaign period during which progress was made but little money was raised despite pledges made prior thereto including increasing taxes Inquisitorial Watchdog published an evaluation stating that “the public officials have done nothing wrong” despite finding deficiencies within City Hall management Vacancies opened up after Ransom’s death leavingLarry King Jr., without any formal planning or process going into place leading eventuallyto widespread criticism over how City Hall functions
