In 1926, Unisys Corporation founded a research center in Oldsmar and it remains an important center for research into opto-mechanical devices today.

Oldsmar was a small town in Pinellas County, Florida until it was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The town is now a ghost town, and its only living inhabitant is the chicken coop, which has been standing since the 1700s. The first settlers of Oldsmar were white men who came to the area in 1892. They built a cabin on the site of today's chicken coop. The citizens of Oldsmar voted to incorporate as a city in 1907. However, because of heavy development in nearby Clearwater and St Petersburg, Oldsmar barely lasted into the 1920s. It wasn't until 1912 that they erected their first building - a courthouse square brick structure which still stands today. After Andrew hit Oldsmar, all but two homes were destroyed or damaged. The few remaining homes were rebuilt with plastic sheeting and concrete after Andrew passed through. None of these homes are now standing due to weather damage or vandalism over time - instead they are all preserved as historical landmarks within the city limits today. Today, there is only one house left standing in Oldsmar and it is currently being used as a museum for local history enthusiasts and school groups alike (it's open from 9am-4pm Monday-Friday). All other buildings have been demolished either by developers looking for prime real estate or by vandals who haveely smashed them into pieces over time...but that's another story!
