It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Escambia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The nucleus of Oldsmar was founded in 1887 by Charles W. Olds and his wife Clara A. Olds when they purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land from J.E. Foster & Co., developers of Mobile Bayou City proper. They named their settlement after their father-in-law Judge George Latham Donelson who had settled near Mobile in 1836 and died there in 1865 before he could get started on developing what would become Escambia County. In 1925 the Donelson family sold their holdings to a group led by Drury & Graves Builders president Olin Hargrave who reorganized it as an incorporated village with status under state law No 710 entitled "OldsmarVillage Inc." On July 1, 1929 all citizens were given voting rights and on October 2nd incorporation was granted to the Village by State Statute No 912 which provided for its election as an unincorporated community within Escambia County with full powers exercisable only through its own Board of Directors which operated until 1978 when it became an elected township subject to same powers as any other municipality within county limits In 1978 Township status was again changed effective November 3rd by Order No 1099 pursuant to State Statute No 1227 pertaining to Towns formed outside of County Limits since such changes did not take effect until then . This order restored Township government functions including finances, zoning authority, building permits and development permits having been previously held by School District #1 .
