Oldsmar, Florida is a town located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The first Oldsmar post office was established on November 3, 1892. The name comes from the Spanish word "oldsmarch" meaning "to cross over". The town was named after General James Moore Olds (1815-1894), who served as Governor of Florida and U.S. Minister to Spain during Reconstruction in the late 1860s and 1870s. The original settlers were farmers who rented land from the Seminole Indians for agriculture and Hunting and Fishing purposes until 1900 when they purchased their own land from them which included parts of what are now Oldsmar and Port Charlotte. The first school in Oldsmar was built on a farmstead that still stands today called Farmington School House which opened in 1895. On April 9, 1903, an act of Congress passed by Representative John Fenton gave Lauderdale County its official start with a population of 2,500 people In 1925 – just three years after it had been organized – Beach Boulevard became one mile wide making it known as “the widest road in America” due to its length and width being more than double that of any other county road at that time! At this time there were only two churches: First Baptist Church (established 1893) then Methodist Episcopal Church (established 1926). Reverend Rufus Witherspoon officiated at both services until his death in 1951 leaving behind an unfinished edifice which would become De Soto Chapel; however this building never materialized as Rev Witherspoon had another son who would take up the mantle starting construction on what would be eventually known as First Baptist Church - now called De Soto Chapel - in 1954! On December 12th 1928 Don Lawler took possession of 581 acres off of State Road 372 just east of present day Oldsmar becoming one of America's early Hispanic citrus growers with his orchard lasting into the 1970’s producing oranges such as navel orange, grapefruit/grapefruit hybrid types etc…..He also sold some adjoining parcels including 1/2 acre rights to Gulfstream Airport……..In 1930 – less than two years before he died suddenly while out harvesting fruit near his Orchard property – Don Lawler donated $5,- 000 towards improvements to Gulfstream Airport…. Later that year WW2 veteran Floyd Dickson leased some additional farmland west side Of Gulfstream Airport for use as military airstrip……After World War II developments continued with a new store built 1935 & within 4 years newer housing constructed 1945……………..Today Peninsula University has their main campus @ oldsmar making it easy for students & residents to get here……………In 1957 Dr J C Macgregor started teaching Business Administration classes at Peninsula University……………………….Many thanks go out to Mrs Lillian Hickey Hebert for her contributions over many years………………………..

Oldsmar is a peninsula located in the Gulf of Mexico, between Pensacola and Jacksonville. It was named for Fenton Olds, an American politician who served as a U.S. Senator from Florida from 1909 to 1933. The area now includes the towns of Fort Myers and Naples, as well as most of the unincorporated areas around them. The first Europeans to visit the Peninsula were Spanish buccaneers who explored it in the early 1500s. In 1765, Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain after winning a war with France over territory in Louisiana. Britain renamed it Oldsmar Territory and granted it to James Robertson, an Scottish explorer and naturalist who had been living in Havana, Cuba since 1761. He set out on what would become known as the Rodriguez Expedition, which followed Spanish Gulf until he reached present-day Pensacola Bay on July 3, 1770. On October 10 of that year he discovered Floridas key island (Island Key) while exploring southeastern Tampa Bay; this was only his second landfall on Florida soil after reaching Cuba four years earlier In 1821 England acquired Florida from Spain via treaty under which Great Britain agreed not to sell any new land east of St Petersburg without express consent of America; America refused to ratify this treaty because it wanted more control over its own coastline However, by 1828 England had effectively lost possession of all but 2 percent of her Caribbean empire due mainly to French aggression; so when President James K Polk decided that part ofFlorida should be annexed into US territory through purchase rather than by military conquest England obtained a writ from Polk ordering him “to take possession thereof” Accordingly on May 12th 1829 USS Constitution carried out Polk’s order , annexing 235 square miles (675 km²) – including all but 7 miles (11 km) of old St Augustine – becoming modern day Miami After annexation English settlers established themselves at various points along the coast including Oldsmar where they built a pier and made contact with Native Americans As part of Seminole Nation Treaty negotiated during Seminole War Tecumseh led 1,500 warriors against British forces at Ybor Cache Creek November 1618 led by Chief Osceola march 400 miles northward across Hillsborough River into Tennessee Valley 4 days later backtracking traveled southWAR TO DEFEND INDIAN NATION AGAINST BRITISH COLONIALISM
