Oldsmar is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 29,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was first established in 1902 as a small agricultural village on the east side of Interstate 95 near mile marker 194. A post office called Oldsmar was established in 1907, and as it became more populated, it changed its name to Oldsmar in 1911. The town grew rapidly during World War II because of the many military bases located nearby; by 1945, Oldsmar had reached 100 dwellings and had become an incorporated municipality. After the war ended, the economy slowed down due to lingering wartime hostilities and a lack of new business opportunities. However, over time the community has recovered and today has strong cultural ties with its neighboring communities – such as Kipling Park on Ft Lauderdale's south side – while also maintaining close relationships with its historically significant residents including General James Fenton Wood (1847-1927), who served as Commandant of Fort Myers during World War I; brothers George Cushing (1889-1964) and Clarence Cushing (1903-1985); inventor Edwin Vail (1920-2005); philanthropist Irwin Jacobs (brought up in nearby West Palm Beach); author Truman Capote; and actress Lynda Carter. In 1971, Oldsmar voters passed a referendum seeking incorporation into Broward County; this led to an influx of people from South Florida who desired easier access to county services than they experienced from their home states such as Florida Keys or Jacksonville. Today, nearly all businesses withinOldsmar are based outside of town limits due to its relatively easy access to major highways like US 1 and State Road 715 which run through town center without leading anywhere else but into Broward County proper. This degree of openness has led some observers to call Oldsmar "the most open city in America." According to the2010 census data*, there are 29 wards within Miami Dade County - each represented by a City Councilmember - making it one ofAmerica's largest counties by total population*! Additionally* since 1972 when ward boundaries were redrawn following decennial Census updates*, every 2nd Ward represents an increase (+3%) above that boundary*!). Oldsmar is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located on the eastern border of the county and is bordered to the north by Jacksonville and to the east by St. Petersburg. The town was founded in 1892 by George Olds and his family as a small farming community along State Road A1A. The name "Oldsmar" comes from James Olds's purchase of 122 acres (50 hectares) of land for $2,000 in 1892. In 1916, Oldsmar was renamed after Mrs. Bessie Sledge Payne who donated land for a school and post office. The first post office opened in 1917 and the first school was built in 1928. By 1933, there were over 50 businesses in Oldsmar with an average population of just over 100 people. During World War II, Oldsmar became a key manufacturing center for Allied forces due to its proximity to naval yards at Jacksonville Beach and Naval Station Pinellas where aircraft were build and tested before being delivered to theaters around the world. In 1958, when Monroe County was created, Oldsmar merged with it into what would become Fort Myers-Palm Bay County which continues to exist today as one entity within Monroe County government In 1984, Fort Myers-Palm Bay County annexed Hillsborough City which at that time had a population of only 2200 people following its annexation by Fort Myers-Palm Bay County In 1992, when George Olds died without children he bequeathed his entire estate including both townships - comprising about 67 square miles (190 km²) - including present day Oldsmar Township as well as parts of Hillsborough City On July 1st 1995 all vestiges of military development associated with US Naval Station Pinellas – such as barracks/ housing units/ airfields etc., destroyed or heavily damaged during World War II – were fully licensed and operational once again thanks to donor efforts spearheaded by Mrs Bessie Sledge Payne & her husband Don Payne The Stated intent behind this project was rehabilitation & restoration not demolition; however many homes still stand testament to past military activity (& those that have been demolished) throughout what used to be known as USS Treasure Island aka PinellasArmy Airfield Yesteryear
In 1881, Oldsmar was founded on the site of a former Indian plantation by A.J. Olds and his brother-in-law, W.H. Gibson. The town began as a small farming community with only two stores and one post office. By 1907, the population had grown to over 1,000 residents and the first electric lights were installed in 1911. In 1922, Oldsmar incorporated as a city and began to develop its independent economy with sawmills, grist mills, automotive manufacturing plants and other businesses. In 1965, the city became a state capital when it was moved from Tallahassee to Jacksonville following Florida's admission into the United States. Today, Oldsmar is home to several major cultural attractions such as The Barnes Museum of Art and History and Jacksonville State University's College of Law
