In 1924, the name was changed to Oldsmar after Rear Admiral John W. Olds who served as Chief of Staff to President Theodore Roosevelt during his tenure as Secretary of War. As one of only two towns in Brevard County that were not destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and 1993 (the other being Deltona), Oldsmar has experienced significant growth over the past few decades due to its location and unique history. Today, Oldsmar remains an important community with close-knit relationships among its residents and businesses. One such business that has thrived in recent years is A&M Tire & Auto Center which opened its doors in 2003 and now employs over 100 people across several departments including sales, finance, parts department and service center operations. The economy for most locals revolves around agriculture; however there are some areas where industry continues to grow such as natural gas extraction from shale formations located near nearby Lake Seminole and manufacturing activity on local farms such as Gatorade production facilities which have become well known throughout Central Florida for their quality products. Oldsmar is a small town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Oldsmar were farmers who moved there from nearby Uniontown in 1851. By 1892, the community had a post office and two churches. In 1911, the name change to Oldsmar after J. C. Olds, one of its founders. The town's rise to prominence began with its role as a key military base during World War II and postwar eras; it became home to US Marine Corps Air Station Oldsmar (later US Marines Air Station Fdleton) and also served as an airfield for Boeing A-17 Flying Fortress bombers during World War II and Korea prior to being closed down in the early 1960s. In recent decades, Oldsmar has become known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration - one of Florida's most popular events - which draws more than 100,000 people each year to downtown Oldsmar square on October 6th through 10th. Today, much of what once made Oldsmar an important center for commerce and culture has been replaced by high-density housing developments around downtown square; however, some of the original businesses still operate today including Barnes & Noble bookstore chain (founded 1909), Gadsden Woolen Mills (established 1850), Asphalt Paving Company (formed 1941), American Legion Post 901 (established 1907), Texas Instruments Incorporated plant No 2 (/Oldsmar Plant 2/ - established 1944) and Verizon Business Solutions Headquarters Building (/Verizon Business Solutions Tower/ - completed 2006).
Oldsmar was founded in 1836 by Capt. George Olds and his family. The town is located on the Kissimmee River, about 12 miles east of Orlando. It became a city in 1907.
