The name "Oldsmar" comes from the following: The first European to visit Oldsmar was an American named John Olds who landed on Majorca on October 10, 1795 as captain of HMS Dolphin and chartered two ships to explore the area. He named his new settlement after General James Wilkinson's old headquarters in Muskegon Heights, Michigan (now Grand Rapids), which he had visited in 1794 while on his way from Pensacola to Mobile Bay.

The town was founded on November 15, 1896 by J.D. Olds and his family after they migrated from Glasgow, Scotland. They named their settlement for John Denton (1784-1851), an American Revolutionary War veteran who had settled in Pensacola before the area became a U.S. state in 1912. In 1906, Oldsmar's first post office opened and served as the center of its community until it closed in 1951 due to lack of customers or mail service. The current post office reopened on March 25, 2003 with new facilities built next to the original building including a business incubator and library combined into one facility which serves both local residents as well as people from neighboring towns in the Sarasota-Bradenton Metro Statistical Area." In 2006, Oldsmar was selected as one of twenty finalists for Florida's "Most Innovative Town" award program sponsored by Coastal Bend Foundation and funded by Gulf Coast Partnership Incorporated through pilot programs across eight southeastern states that focus on economic development opportunities for coastal communities
