Ocoee is a town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,547 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after Ocoee River which flows through it. The first settlers were white men from Georgia who came in 1851 and built a log cabin on the banks of the river. The town officially began to be created on December 12th, 1866 when two men by the name of Cocker and Cook laid out a road around what is now downtown Ocoee. The first store opened in 1870 called "Citrus County Store". In 1907, voters passed a resolution to rename their city as "Ocoee" in honor of General James Fenton and his wife Julia Child who had given money to establish an agricultural school in Kissimmee. In 1912, they passed another resolution to annex Citrus County and create Ocala as its own municipality with its own government and fire department. On November 3rd 1913 the new City charter was ratified by residents with Mayor Egan leading the parade through downtown streets with flags flying high as they processioned past City Hall towards Purdy's Drug Store for their mayoral inauguration ceremony that evening

Ocoee was founded in 1836 by Major George Rogers Clark as a post office on the Oconee River. The town was named after General James K. Polk's native country, Ocala, Florida. In 1875, the town was renamed Ocoee in honor of Commodore John D. Sloat, Jr., who led U.S. Squadron Vandalia into Cuba during the Spanish-American War and afterwards became a national hero. After Commodore Sloat's death in 1881, the town again reverted to its original name until it changed back to Ocoee in 1991 when it became part of Miami-Dade County. The first white settlers in what is now Ocoee were Captain John Fenton and his family from Georgia who arrived around 1790 with their livestock and tents; they were followed by Captain Abraham Goodspeed about 1800 who built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river; Samuel Prentice settled here about 1810 with his family; Jabez Bowen came here early in 1820 and established himself as one of the most successful merchants of that time; Tobias Sprague began life hereabouts 1830 but removed to Tallahassee due to health problems caused by yellow fever; David Ladd homesteaded here about 1840 with his family before moving eastward along Volusia Creek near present day De Soto Avenue; John Beasley located some five miles downriver from this point an opened a store which he ran for several years; Colonel Nicholas Hickey arrived at Ocoee around 1840 with his forces under General Phillip Sheridan during their march through this area against Seminole Indians Our earliest newspaper reference comes from October 3rd,1835 when "The Jacksonville Gazette" published an article entitled "New Post Office Established at Ocoee". This establishment served as a mail stop for travelers en route between Tallahassee and Pensacola passing through this area on their way southward along the Apalachicola River Valley In 1850 Captain Daniel Smiths reported that he had discovered iron ore near & ahead of where present day NW First Street & OG Gulf Boulevard intersection now stands On October 9th 1850 US surveyor Wm J Finley announced via dispatch rider that he had sighted large pieces of coal lying off shore on site claimed by both parties Following these initial discoveries additional surveys were conducted including one made by Mr C H Wilkinson utilizing sextant data which revealed 8 miles long Priest Channel connecting Nassau Sound To Mobile Bay On November 7th 1850 Capt A M Self landed team of horses at mouth of channel & proceeded up stream finding coal bed very plainly visible extending 2 or 3 rods over water surface Coal was brought ashore aboard ship Grosse Pointe July 10th 1861 while loose rocks lay offshore near spot where NW First Street & OG Gulf Boulevard intersection now stands . . . Today we enjoy lovely views across Lake Pontchartrain just steps away from our doorstep
