Ocoee is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1881 by the wife of Colonel Thomas J. O’Connell and the husband of Mrs. Anna L. Sinkler, two sisters who traveled to Cuba to purchase guns for their father-in-law, General Pedro de la Rosa y Silva. The community acquired its first gun in 1882 when Captain John Dickey bought a French rifle from José Antonio Fernandez at an auction. In 1895, Ocoee became one of the original towns in Polk County when it was created from part of Muskegee County. The population peaked at 1,200 in 1920 and declined to about 500 by 1930 due to World War II military relocation programs and other factors. The history of gun targets is closely intertwined with that of Ocoee itself; both are products of Spanish colonialism and are now home to sizable Hispanic populations which have contributed significantly to the culture and traditions of these communities. Gun targets were introduced into Ocoee by Captain John Dickey as part of his effort to provide firearms for local militia units during the early 1800s. At first they were made out of cane or bamboo but eventually began using cast iron objects as well (Dickey later stated he wanted “to make them so tough you can't hit them if you try”). By 1900, cast iron targets had become a common sight in most rural areas across America due to their affordability and ease of manufacturing compared to wrought iron or wood targets. Ocoee is a small town in northwestern Florida, located on the Ocoee River. The population was 5,597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1884 by two brothers from Jacksonville, Florida, W. H. and Orville Jones. The name "Ocoee" came from an Indian word meaning "place where the water flows clean." The first settlers were farmers who began to arrive in 1885 and 1886. They used their land for farming, but also built a store and post office in 1888. By 1890, there were 10 businesses in Ocoee including three banks, one insurance company and four schools: one high school (grades 9-12), one middle school (grades 7-8), and one elementary school (grades K-5). In 1911, the Ocoee Daily Times became the first newspaper published in Ocoee Township; it was continued until 1975 when it merged with the Gainesville Daily News & Herald to form Today's Gainesville Newspapers Incorporated. There is no one answer to this question as the history of gun targets has been varied and complex. From early Mesopotamian tombs with swords, spears, and bow and arrow practice pits to modern IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) pistols and shotguns, target shooting has been a part of many cultures for centuries. In English-speaking countries, target shooting began in the late 18th century when shot was used to practise archery. The first gunshot guns were invented in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte at the French Arsenal in Paris. In Ireland, where rifle ranges had been established since the 12th century, target shooting began as early as 1693 with an “atlarge” system using balls that could be fired from a crossbow or hand cannon. Rifle range meetings were held throughout Ireland until about 1800. Gunnery schools teaching shotgun use began appearing in England during the mid-19th century. These schools taught courses on how to shoot handguns at various distances including 1/2 mile (1 kilometer) and 50 yards (50 meters). Shotguns started being used more frequently for target shooting around 1850 when they became available in larger numbers than handguns. By 1870 alone, over 60 million shotguns had been sold in Great Britain alone! Pistol shooters soon followed suit with their own versions of shotgun rounds such as buckshot and birdshot becoming very popular among tournament shooters during the 19th century through to today. The beginning of gun targets history can be traced back even further however; back to ancient Babylon – which is where start using porcupine quills instead of arrows for firing purposes may have taken place some 2,500 years ago!
In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant issued Order No. 7 to his commanders in the field ordering them to shoot at any and all Confederate soldiers who had not surrendered. This order was known as the "Grant Massacre." The order led to a total of 377 dead and 5,000 wounded Confederate troops.

In 1907, Ocoee was incorporated as a city by an act of the state legislature. The city's growth started slowly but steadily over the years. In 1959, it became part of Tampa metropolitan area and experienced rapid growth thereafter. Much of that growth came from businesses established within the city limits such as Samsung and County-Wide Radio Corporation (CW). CW operated several stations within City limits which helped contribute to the local economy and cultural attraction. Today, Ocoee remains a vibrant community with active businesses and strong civic organizations committed to promoting quality life values within its boundaries
Ocoee was founded in 1836 by Captain John S. O'Keefe as a trading post on the Citrus River. The post was located about two miles upstream from present-day Ocoee, on the east bank of the river. In 1839, Governor James K. Polk established a military reservation around present-day Ocoee to provide for Seminoles who had been relocated to Florida during the 1830s via Creek Indian Removal policies of Spanish American War general Antonio López de Santa Anna. The first white settler in what is now Ocoee was J.P. Richardson, who arrived in 1837 and built a cabin on what is now Richards Springs Road. By 1840, other settlers had also arrived, including Hugh Purdy and his family, which would later become part of the Richardson/Humphrey clan that ran Ocoee until 1893. On November 3, 1841, Captain O'Keefe sold his holdings at Ocoee to Richard Hays for $1,000 cash and 10 acres of land called "Hillsborough." In 1848–49 General Wiley Smith explored the area and recommended that Jacksonville build a bridge over the Citrus River at what is now downtown Jacksonville to connect with Fort Harrison inland on St Johns River (then known as Fort Myers). After some debate among members of Congress about how best to proceed with this project—including whether or not Jacksonville should build its own bridge—Jacksonville decided to partner with Pensacola instead and build the first toll bridge across Florida's Atlantic Coast at Tampa Bay on December 12, 1849. This event helped establish Jacksonville as one of Florida's major city centers and spanned much of its early growth while Tampa continued to grow northward into Everglades National Park near today's Sanford).
