The first English settler in Ocoee was John Patten, who arrived on July 12, 1784. He named the site after his friend and business partner Nicholas O’Connell. A group of thirteen men reached the area on horseback on November 15, 1785 and founded a small town called Indian Key. The town was abandoned by 1812 because the Seminoles had taken over the area. In 1827, Anna Maria Scott purchased 640 acres of land east of Indian Key from Colonel Augustus Baldwin for $1,000. She started a cotton plantation and named it After Mrs. Scott’s Daughter Creek after her daughter AnnaMaria Baldwin Scott (1803-1887). The plantation was successful but she died young in 1881 at age 55. In 1886, Jacksonville banker and real estate developer Prentice Mosely bought the farm from Anna Maria Scott’s heirs for $7 million dollars. Mosely renamed the property Ocoee cane fields after his wife’s father-in-law General Lafayette Cushman (1786-1856), who had donated the land to Jacksonville in 1824 as part of a deal that allowed Florida statehood to be granted to Mississippi
