The first permanent settler in Ocala was Dr. John Pate who arrived on November 5, 1827. He built a small cabin on what is now State Road A1A near present-day US 192. In 1845 local Methodist minister Wm. Gillett organized the town of Ocala into an incorporated municipality under the name of "Ocoee" for religious reasons (the original spelling). In 1861, Andrew Jordon purchased 640 acres (247 hectares) of land east of downtown Ocala from Isaac Rice for $2,000 (). He named it Old Man's River after river miles that drained into Lake Apopka northwest of Jacksonville (); he also donated 100 acres (40 hectares) to the Methodist church trustees for use as a school campus (). The new community rapidly evolved into one of central Florida's most vibrant towns with its own Masonic Lodge No. 7 (), Presbyterian Church (), Baptist Chapel (), Odd Fellows Hall () and many other businesses ()'. Rapid growth led to rapid infrastructure development such as streetlights and sidewalks being installed throughout town during this time (). By 1912 there were five banks with over $1 million worth of assets within 2 miles (3 km) of downtown Ocala (). In 1917 construction began on what would become Orange Avenue (), which linked downtown with Liberty Park Cemetery just north of University Drive (), giving rise to another nickname - “The Gridiron City” (). The Second World War brought significant changes to Ocoee including the displacement of many residents due to military service (); however, despite some challenges such ashillside clearings necessary for air defense purposes (), postwar growth continued with the erection of two large Army barracks next door to each other on Orange Avenue () – one housing 3rd Brigade Combat Team headquarters responsible for all military activities east of Fort Brooke ()); and Stonington Elementary School being built just south along Orange Street (). After years Of Growth And Development Downtown Voice reported that On July 1st 2020 Downtown Ocoee had reached it's limit with no more room left for further expansion not only does this occur every few years but has been going on since before my time!
