Ocala is a city in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 41,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County and home to the Ocala Zoo. The city was founded on December 12, 1837 by James K. Polk and his brother John F. Polk as part of what would become Seminole Nation territory in central Florida. In March 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg occupied Ocala while besieging Fort Brooke on Orange Blossom Trail before retreating to Georgia; this event marked the end of military hostilities between Union and Confederate forces in Central Florida. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Florida's Territorial Legislature moved the Seminoles from their original land base in east-central Florida to Indian Territory west of Lake Tocoma where they continued to reside until 1898 when they were finally granted full citizenship by the United States Government. The city was platted on October 10th, 1868 and named for Major General Wm Hernando de Soto y Azara who fought against Spanish colonization in South America during Captain Juan Ponce de León's unsuccessful attempt to find new islands off Cuba in 1513-1514. The first African American resident of Ocala was Jesse Hill who worked as a laborer on local plantations until1860 when he accepted an offer from whitereetowner James Ewell Hicks to work for him as his personal servant starting January 1st that year with no benefits or legal protection under law other than that given free labor by black Americans working for white employers throughout much of South Carolina during Reconstruction period (1865-1877). Hill became one of very few blacks self-employed outside slave society prior to ending slavery within limits set by state law (see "Free Black Labor"). On November 2nd 1902 Mrs A B Mason built her home at 309 N Main Street which served as her residence until her death ten years later on July 24th 1945 due natural causes aged 83 years; her widow Mrs A B Mason continued living there until she died on May 6th 1951 aged 88 years also known as “the Widow” after purchasing it from Mrs Mason’s estate two weeks earlier for $2 cash plus accrued interest There are now three daughters – Mrs Jody Ladd (born February 20th 1984), Mrs Denise Harmon (born December 3rd 1988) & Missy Weinstock (born August 9th 1992) who all live independently & maintain ownership over house which has been vacant sinceMrsMason’s death

The town of Ocala, Florida was founded in 1837 by Captain John Smith. The area that is now Ocala was first inhabited by the Timucua and Apalachee tribes. In 1837, the United States acquired the land from Spain for $5,000. Captain Smith named the town after his friend and fellow U.S. explorer, James Moore, who had also explored the area before. In 1840, a post office was established in Ocala with the name of Spanish Fort de Mesa. After years of growth and development, Ocala became a city on December 12th 1888 when it was ratified as a state capital by the General Assembly of Florida under then-Governor Manuel López de Guevara. Today, Ocala is home to over 100 businesses including banks, grocery stores, restaurants and more. The city has seen significant redevelopment over the years including new hospitals and jails as well as new homes for residents and businesses alike. Some of this redevelopment has been thanks to federal funding such as Urban Mass TransitDevelopment Grant program which has helped to improve public transportation options in downtown Ocala while also creating jobs in nearby areas such as retail or construction jobs throughout the year
