Today much of downtown Ocala remains unchanged from days before automobiles were common or even possible; only two streets have been replaced since 1990 – State Street between Railroad Avenue and First Street NW (now US 27)and Market Street east/west between First Street NW and State Street NE (now US 192). Many businesses closed during high school years such as Sears & Roebuck while others thrived like Kohl’s Department Store which still occupies portions of Third Avenue SW across from Terminal Station today despite closure in 1977 due to hurricane damage caused by Hurricane Andrew six months earlier; prior to that store shutdown many people walked or took public transportation into town daily due lack thereof available within a short radius near home Katrina destroyed much more proximate commercial areas early post storm recovery so this portion remains open today as well

The area that is now Ocala, Florida was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The first European to arrive in what is now Ocala was Captain James Cook in 1778. He and his crew were looking for an opening on the mainland to find a new route to India. They explored the area around present-day Ocala before settling down at Fort Moultrie. In 1814, Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson founded the town of Gainesville along with Fort Moultrie. When Florida became a state in 1821, Gainesville became its capital and remains so today.
