A year later he moved his community to what is now downtown Ocala because of its strategic location at the mouth of Pensacola River which allowed passage from Alabama into Pensacola Bay without being blockaded by Spanish Fort or Mobile Point on Mobile Bay. In 1825 Pedro Meneses started growing sugar cane hereabouts and began shipping sugar back to Cuba from this site beginning in 1827; until that time sugar had been grown only by slave labor in Havana or Mexico City Some early settlers were: Captain John Fife (1811-1892), Capt Samuel Morse (1812-1893), Manuel Martinez (baptized December 3, 1813), James Robertson (baptized March 21, 1830), Lorenzo Boggs (died 1865). By 1920, Jacksonville had outgrown Ocala and merged with nearby Tallahassee to form what is now known as Jacksonville-Tallahassee County.
