In 1614, French explorer Jacques Marquette discovered Mobile Bay and named it Nouvelle Angoulême after his homeland ofAngoulême, France. When St Augustine founded Pensacola in 1765, he chose to locate his new town on the banks of the Kissimmee River adjacent to Mobile Bay so that trade between Spain and America could be developed without fear of pirates or English interference. The land for Ocala was bought by Captain John Smith from Native American leaders in 1775 for £5 per acre (today's $127). Captain James Cook sailed past Ocala on his third voyage around Cape Canaveral on July 3rd, 1779 while exploring Florida's Gulf Coast; he called it "New Orleans". He left a landfalling letter at this spot which has been cited as proof that what we now call Ocala was then known as New Orleans Cove. In 1835 Governor Jepson assigned Colonel Andrew Johnson to survey Indian Territory north of Lake Superior before its annexation into Illinois by Abraham Lincoln when that state was formed from parts of Indiana and Michigan Territory. Lieutenant Colonel George Pickens took over Johnson's survey during February 1836 but found only swampy land suitable for settlement – until Brigadier General John Moultrie came along with his cavalry unit and began clearing away brush and constructing roads etc., setting off a severe crop failure which caused most settlers to return home before winter set in. On May 2nd, 1837 Jacksonville became an incorporated town when Jacksonville County was created from Miami Township; it had a population of about 10 men under arms with one jail capacity when organized law enforcement didn't exist yet nor did road building regulations which prevented much development other than residences being built on high ground within 1/2 mile distance east/west of downtown core.) On November 14th 1841 Jacksonville annex’d Gainesville; Gainsville had a population of about 400 people when annexed and had no school & only 6 houses out numbered by 4 hundred citizens living within 1/2 mile radius surrounding it) By 1865 Gainesville had over 12000 residents with over 100 businesses including several stores & hotels! A post office opened at Gainesville on October 8th 1846 renamed Ybor City after Ibor Parklands west side property owner William Yatesborough) The first courthouse stood on Second Street NE corner US 36 just south of present day Polk Parkway NE today’s University Drive NW corner lot back then just two blocks long front room / back room small . Court started Oct 11 '46 using courtroom still current location down 2nd street NE 2nd Ave SE until daily papers moved into courthouse Sept 30 ..... court continued sitting out door until main floor used Jan 5 '47 then moved inside due court needed larger space new courthouse built across SW end alley from old hospital

Ocala, Florida is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Escambia County. Ocala is on the Gulf Coast of Florida and lies about halfway between Pensacola and Mobile Bay. The area that would become Ocala was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Escambia County in 1795 as part of the Northwest Indian War fought by the Seminole Tribe against Spanish colonists. In 1810, General Andrew Jackson's army burned all of Tampa after they captured it from French forces during their Expedition to Cuba; this event helped spur development in this region. In 1832 Governor Niccolòmastro announced plans to build a road connecting Pensacola with Jacksonville via Eustis; however, no action was taken until 1835 when Colonel James Wilkinson designated one-half mile (1 km) east of present-day downtown Ocala as town square for "The Square". On July 4th, 1837 land was donated by Pierre L'Enfant for a public school system; this led to the creation of what would later become known as "The Square". The first teacher in town was Mrs. Fenton who taught children from five to twelve years old at an old log schoolhouse which had been built on Watauga Creek upstream from today's square. In 1847–48 Jno.[sic] Biddle built his brick church on what is now US 1 south of downtown Ocala and named it St John's Episcopal Church after Bishop John Ireland (1792-1868). The parishioners decided not to erect any more churches until they could find someone who could make bricks commercially; this led to Father James Lynch becoming pastor in 1850 and starting construction on our current Saint John's Episcopal Cathedral located near Graceland Park across US 1 from downtown Ocala today. However, despite Father Lynch's best efforts local completion delays continued until finally God willing (1853),[1]Builder Augustus Kelley finished building our beautiful new Town Hall which we now use as our City Hall Annex! After almost 50 years of hard work by many people including my predecessor Sister Catherine McLaughlin I am excited to see continuing growth and investment throughout these next few years while we continue working towards ultimate success!
