In that year, Captain John Stoneman and his ship, the brig Friendship, landed on a small island near Ocala and started trading with the natives. They found weapons and ammunition there that they used for protection against friendly Indians. In 1829, Major George Edwards founded the town of Ocala on the east side of Lake County. He named it after General James Wilkinson's army that had fought in Mexico City earlier that year. Edwards was a military man who believed in using firepower to protect his people from hostile Seminoles. He also thought that gunpowder would make his town more powerful than any other village in America at this time. A few years later, Colonel Nathaniel Lyon purchased land west of Ocala and began farming it out to settlers. He built a house here on July 4th, 1835, which is still standing today…It was one of the first homes in Ocala and remained so until 1978 when it was sold to become part of the new University Park campus. Back then, agriculture wasn't as important as it is now; most people lived off what they hunting or fishing could catch or trade with neighboring villages for supplies (today's hunters/gators). However, farming became an important industry because it allowed for more efficient transportation of goods between these villages and markets across America due to its proximity to other centers of production like Cincinnati and Louisville (then called Kentucky). It wasn't until after World War II when tractors became popular here that agriculture took over as our principal source of income – something we continue doing today!

Ocala is a city in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County. The city was founded by pioneers in 1837 and incorporated as a town on February 4, 1907. Ocala became an independent city on December 1, 1959. The first evidence for human habitation in what is now Ocala dates to 3200 BC when Paleo-Indians discovered shell mounds near present-day Ocala and other sites in central Marion County. By 500 AD there were numerous villages throughout central Marion County and east-central Polk County. The Mississippian culture began settling the area around Lake Waccamaw in what is now eastern Polk County about 1225 AD and built several towns including Ponce de Leon (present day Jacksonville), Apalachicola (now Pensacola), Muckleshoot (now part of Tallahassee) and Wakulla (now part of Live Oak). The Creek Indians raided Spanish settlements along the Gulf Coast during the early colonial era but no contact occurred until 1592 when Diego Velázquez arrived in Florida with his expedition led by Hernando de Soto from Mexico City. On July 24, 1502 he named Flagler's Inland Empire after himself and his brother Antonio de la Cosa y Velázquez governor of Cuba at that time; however this name only applied to territory north of Mobile Bay which lay within Spanish Florida proper although it included parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana).
