Ocala, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Ocala has been inhabited by Native American and Paleo-Indians for more than two thousand years. The first white settlers arrived in 1836 and founded what is now known as Ocala Junction on the Intracoastal Waterway. By 1839, they had organized into a town under the name of "Ocala". In 1845, they changed their name to "Canton", after Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They were again renamed to "Ocala" in 1896 when their county was created. According to the US Census Bureau, Ocala has a total area of 362 square miles (1128 square kilometers). The history of Ocala can be traced back to Stagecoach Road which led from this small village northwestward along state road 9N until it reached present day US Highway 98W which crosses over I-4 just south of downtown (then called Indianola Avenue) on its way northward through Bradford and then eastward to meet US Highway 98E just south of downtown (then called Ascot Avenue). This stage route crossed three water courses: the Caloosahatchee River on Stagecoach Road bridge over it near present day Waltonville; Battle Creek on CR 706 near present day Lakeland; and Clearwater River at Battle Creek Bridge about 8 miles northeast of today's city limits (now within City Hall boundaries). In 1836 a group of five white men established what became known as Ocala Junction on Stagecoach Road between Ascot Avenue and Waltonville Boulevard with wagonloads of goods brought downriver by steamboats from Stonington Landing on Long Island Sound. This started what would become one of the most important businesses in early Jacksonville – shipping goods upriver from Long Island Sound for export across Central Florida during that era before railroad development destroyed this lucrative business activity downstream in Jacksonville. The first Europeans to visit Ocala, Florida were the Spanish in 1565. The area was part of the Ten Thousand Islands and was known as Tocobaga. In 1614, the English built Fort Moultrie on the present day site of Walt Disney World. A second fort, Fort Myers, was built in 1794. The area became a haven for pirates and smugglers during this time. The town of Ocala began to form in 1824 when traders founded it along the Stonington River. By 1830, Ocala had a population of 2,500 people. In 1837, Jacksonville was founded by Captain John Withrow and businesspeople from Ocala moved to Jacksonville in search of opportunities. However, with the American Civil War going on between Confederate States of America (CSA) and Union States (US), business opportunity dried up in Jacksonville and Ocala lost its status as a major trading center during that period. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Jacksonville grew rapidly whileOcala languished until 1881 when both towns merged into one city under their new name: Orlando
