Ocala, Florida is a city in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,269 at the 2010 census. Ocala is the county seat of Marion County. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ocala was founded on March 3, 1853 by Captain Jesse Hurd and his brother-in-law Capt Charles Smith. On May 11, 1853, Indian Chief Osceola made an attack on what became known as "The Battle of Big Creek". Commodore James Gadsden's squadron under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter fought off Osceola's forces while Fort Moultrie held the village and its inhabitants until after dark when they abandoned it to their attackers. Aftermath of that battle marked the beginning of what would be a long history of white settlement in central Florida because most other Indian attacks during that period were successful only in driving out the natives rather than conquering them outright. In 1861 Jacksonville was established as a town within Marion County and on July 1st that year Ocala became its capital with Jax becoming the first incorporated municipality in Seminole County date unknown according to one source but it seems more likely that this occurred before or concurrently with Jacksonville’s incorporation which took place on November 10th, 1861 On December 5th 1873 Captain John Latham erected for $5 per acre (adjusted today to $100 peracre) The first courthouse square in Ocala which he named “Square One” after himself and two other early settlers who had also contributed money towards its erection: Wm Fenton and Averell Harriman among others It should be noted here that at this time there were no sidewalks or streetlights throughout much of rural Seminole County so any reference to squares or streets will likely have been based upon lighted markers remaining from those days
The first European to visit Ocala was a Spanish conquistador, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, in 1539. A group of French Huguenots who had come ashore from Spain were also living in the area at that time. They began trading with the natives and visiting their villages. In 1675, English pirate Captain Philips made landfall on Florida Bay and raided native villages. The local Indian chief, Timucua, fought against Philips but was killed as a result. It wasn't until 1763 when British forces arrived in Florida and began fighting American colonists that permanent European settlement started. By 1800, there were over 100 Europeans living in Ocala County.
