On August 25th 1861 Ulysses S Grant notified Governor Carlos IE Hernando de Soto that Union forces were moving towards Gainesville and ordered him Not To Come Any nearer Our Town Without Leave Of These gentlemen Who Shall Guide You Thereunto & We Will Provide For Your defence If Needful On November 3rd 1861 Confederate Brigades under General Robert E Lee arrived at Gainesville from Charlestonptown South Carolina unopposed but found stores empty inside the fortifications so ordered them evacuated without offering battle or giving any information on their movements or intentions leading some historians believing that this may have been an prelude to a surrender or even an all out assault on Gainesville should Confederate forces have become apparent heading into daylight The Battle Of Gainesville opened up on November 5th 1861 when Confederates attacked Union troops near where today's University Avenue meets Main Street outside of downtown Ocala while Federal troops held off rear guard units led by Major General Winfield Scott who later said he never saw such “foolhardy” behavior from his soldiers letting himself be surrounded and forced back against buildings before successfully rallying his force holding off repeated Confederate charges until darkness fell resulting in over 50 casualties for both sides

After trading posts were established at Fort Moultrie and Stonington in 1840, military activity decreased around here until 1851 when Seminoles again raided Spanish missions here.
