In 1986, it annexed most of unincorporated Polk County including Stonington which had been its unofficial city since 1912. Oakland Park was founded on May 12, 1892 by Daniel and Fannie Taylor. The town boundaries were set at the intersection of mileposts 3 and 4 on the present-day west side of I-10. The name was chosen to honor General James K. Polk, who had made an unsuccessful attempt to annex Jacksonville in 1878. The first post office in Oakland Park was established on July 1, 1893. On November 30, 1896, a school opened in the town limits. In 1899, a church also opened in Oakland Park. In 1908, the Jackson County Road Commission was established in Oakland Park and soon constructed roads that connected the community to nearby Jacksonville. In 1912, the population of Oakland Park numbered 220 residents; however, by 1918 it had grown to 460 residents. That year saw the opening of a new school building located east of town on State Street; this structure served as both the original primary school for students from early morning until late evening and also housed a library until 1958 when it moved to its present location across I-10 from Community College University (CCU). In 1925, Interstate 10 was completed through most of Jacksonville which caused traffic congestion along US 17 nears town center; accordingly, Hwy 20A (now I-10) was built concurrent with I-10 between east side rush hour and west side during this time period bypassing downtownJacksonville completely while still allowing access from east side only within certain limited areas around business districts and other high traffic areas throughout weekday hours only while providing some relief during off hours when I-5 or SR 417 are available
