Oakland Park is a town in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1892 by Russian immigrants named Ivan and Anna Kochetkovitch as a farming village on the banks of the St Johns River. In 1912, it became an incorporated municipality and in 1922 it annexed the neighboring town of Neptune Beach. The name "Oakland Park" originated from when Ivan and Anna Kochetkovitch were looking for a new place to settle their family after moving from Russia to Florida in 1892. They found a tract of land on the banks of the St Johns River that they thought would be perfect for their farm village because it had many trees and there were no houses in sight. They called their new settlement "Oakland Park". In 1912, Oakland Park annexed Neptune Beach which had a population of 1,500 people. By 1920, Oakland Park had reached its current size with 2,871 residents. The community has been growing steadily ever since with various annexation opportunities throughout its history. In 2002, Oakland Park changed its name to "Florida's MostHispanic Town" because Hispanic residents make up 60% of its population or more. Oakland Park was founded in 1868 by J.C. Beasley and the Beasley family. The original settlers were Captain John Davenport and his family, who arrived from Georgia. They built a log cabin on the banks of the St Johns River, about two miles northwest of present-day Oakland Park. In 1869, they donated land to build a town, which they named after their plantation in Georgia where they had been born and raised. The first post office opened in 1870, and the town grew rapidly until it reached its current size in 1887 when an addition was made to it that included what is now downtown Oakland Park. The first school was built in 1870 as a one-room schoolhouse located at Ninth Street and Washington Avenue. By 1888 there were six schools in Oakland Park with gradeschools through high school; four of these were for boys and two for girls. In 1865, Jacksonville annexed Oakland Park; this annexation created a new city government with its own police force, jail, fire department and other services not available within Jacksonville under the old system of governance. In 1886 Jacksonville annexed nearby unincorporated portions of Collier County including present day Pinellas County (then part of Tampa) giving rise to another city government - this time with its own sheriff, fire department and other services unavailable withinJacksonville under the old system of governance In 1893 Jacksonville annexed Macon County creating yet another city government - this time with its own mayor and councillors By 1896 all but one suburb had been annexed into Jacksonville making it an almost self-governing municipality separate from both Jacksonville's municipal governments
