A post office was established there in 1887, and the name changed to Oakland Park in 1907. In 1912, a branch of Northern Illinois Railroad passed through the community and brought traffic with it, which contributed to its growth. By 1920, Oakland Park had a population of over 1,000 people and boasted an educational institution: Oakland Park High School. In 1925, local developer John Ewart donated land for a new golf course that would become one of Jacksonville's most popular tourist attractions. Construction began on the $2 million golf course which opened in 1928. The facility became known as Oakmont Country Club and continued to be used by locals and visitors alike until it closed its doors in 1974 following severe damage from Hurricane Agnes. Oakland Park residents have long enjoyed access to some of Jacksonville's finest shopping opportunities includingTarget and JCPenney locations near their homes as well as various other businesses within walking distance like Barnes & Noble and Kmart scattered throughout the towns centerline. Oakland Park, Florida was an island in the Tampa Bay area of Florida that was ceded to the United States after the Seminole Wars. The island came into being as a result of a land deal between Spain and the United States in 1813. The first permanent settler on what is now Oakland Park was James K. Polk, who purchased 5 acres of land from Alonso de la Vega in 1824. In 1840, another developer, Albert Gallatin, bought 10 acres and began developing the property into a town site with homes, businesses and schools. By 1870, there were over 100 people living on the island. In 1898, following an agreement between President William McKinley and Spanish governor Don José Antonio Carreño bisected Tampa Bay so that it would form U.S. East Coast waters atSt Petersburg/Clearwater Harborandthe rest of Tampa Bay would become part of Cuba; Oakland Park became part of St Petersburg County in 1903. In 1907–1908, federal troops used Station Island as a training ground for new recruits during World War I; some soldiers lived on Station Island until they were moved to Camp Springs Naval Reserve Plantation on Clearwater Beach later that year or returned home before Christmas 1899. In 1922-1923 two hurricanes (in similar patterns) struck Pinellas County leaving damage estimated at $2 million dollars including lossy roofs and windows throughout much of downtown St Pete which never recovered fully from either storm; most evident damage occurred within blocks of Federal Hall which had been leveled by one hurricane alone but still stands today as one quarter mile wide beltway composed mostly of rubble remnant from both storms - this disaster is also often referred to as "The Great Oakland Park Fire" due to its destructive aftermath Oakland Park's population peaked at around 200 people in 1925 but slowly declined due to social unrest caused by automobiles becoming available for purchase more easily than wages could supportably pay for fuel and repairs needed during high traffic seasons such as summer tourist season when beaches were closed due to high waves & winds).
