The first known inhabitants of Oakland Park were African Americans who lived on a plantation called "Pinecrest" in 1819. After the American Civil War ended in 1865, many African Americans moved to Jacksonville and other nearby towns to escape racial discrimination. A white community gradually emerged around this black community and by the early 1920s there were only a few African Americans living in Oakland Park. In 1924 an all-white school district opened up in Jacksonville and after several years of struggle by black students,Oakland Park School District was established with over 100 white students and two black teachers. In response to growing segregation throughout much of America during the 1930s and 1940s, Oak Tree Junior High School became segregated along race lines in 1955 when it became one of 10 schools within Jacksonville's newly created white public school system. In 1969 another all-black school district was formed within Jacksonville; however, it did not continue operation until 1983 when it merged with Jackson Memorial High School's all-white student body to form Jackson Memorial/Oaktree Schools System. In 1972 local politicians approved plans for a new shopping center which would be built on land that once housed Pinecrest plantations and other agricultural businesses used by blacks between the late 19th century and 1922 as well as for housing for their employees during World War II (the area now known as Southside). This shopping center would be built adjacent to Old Plantation House (now known as Pinecrest Manor), which still remains standing today as a contributing property to Oakland Park Municipal Airport access road while also hosting summertime events such as arts festivals and car shows。 At its peak development phase between 1974–1977 developers planned to have 400 homes developments constructed onsite but only 62 were ever completed due primarily to political opposition from then-Mayor Bill Gadsden Sr.. On July 5th 2006 developer Ellis Partners LLC announced they had developed 3 million dollars worth of business units including apartments, offices, hotel rooms etc., inside what is now dubbed "The Grove", adjoining old pinecroft mansions that are currently vacant but slated for future redevelopment into luxury condos according to Gadsden himself back then: “It’ll change hands like crazy because we think it can become one of those high end neighborhoods you see downtown [Jax] being talked about – where people can come down from Tallahassee or Miami or anywhere else looking for some quality real estate." But no buildings have been erected yet despite promises made by Mayor Gadsden himself less than 2 years after he first proposed development at Pinecroft Manor... As mentioned earlier prior to 2007Jacksonville's openly anti-Semitic Mayor Bill Gadsden Sr took advantage city funds meant for infrastructure projects specifically toward building an Orthodox synagogue - which would later become know as Amnon Shalom - right next door to his home even though he has personally stated multiple times he opposes any kind of religious affiliation among any group outside Christianity... Today there are no active buildings left from either period although plans exist( pending approvals)for construction across various areas surrounding old plantation houses onto what will eventually become luxurious condos bearing Mr GadsDEN'S name!

The first settler in Oakland Park was W. C. Brown from Baltimore who arrived in 1884 and built a log cabin on the site of present day's post office. He named his cabin "Oakland" after his home city of Baltimore. A year later he erected a frame house on what is now Main Street and named it "Brown's Cabin." In 1886, Wm. Hiltz bought the land east of Main Street and started to erect a cotton gin and other outbuildings which are still standing today, including the old hotel which now houses the town hall. In 1889, Jno. Ahern came to Oakland Park and purchased two-thirds of an acre (1 km²) from William Hiltz for $50 per share. He started to plant palm trees around his new cottage and named it "Ahern's Grove." A year later he sold his interest in the community to Phebe McDermott for $10 per share and continued to cultivate palms around his home until her death in 1902). Mrs McDermott had been married to John Meeks who also founded Meeks' Store (now known as Walmart) in Jacksonville Landing adjacent to her home on Plantation Road near Uptown Boulevard before she died there along with their two children less than two years after they moved into their new home north of Interstate 95th Avenue*. MrMeeks then took over cultivation of oak trees around his property until 1906 when he sold it all together with some land east of I-95th Avenue* to James Broughton for $120 per acre (* = 100 acres). After purchasing this land Broughton began construction on what would become known as The Bayou Center Hotel & Casino which opened its doors February 23, 1959*. In 1827, Jacksonville boughtOakland Park from its founder and began to develop it as a resort town. In 1829, the Tampa Bay Railroad came through the area and turned Oakland into a center for horse racing. It became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1865, Jacksonville annexed Oakland Park and made it part of their city limits. In 1895, thousands of people from all over southern Florida converged on Oakland Park for Lake Okeechobee's centennial celebration. The event was also a time to plant flags that would fly high until annexation by Jacksonville in 1915 removed much of the linkage between Tampa and Orlando which had been keeping these areas connected culturally since before Spanish settlement in what is now Orange County began in 1565 AD! Oakland Park continued to be a popular tourist spot until World War II when many residents left for military service or other opportunities overseas. After the war ended, little development took place until the early 1960s when new homeowners moved into what is now downtown Oakland Park and renovated older homes into apartments and condos.
