In 1830 Dunbar donated two tracts of land lying east of present-day Oakland Park and west of Old Town Jacksonville for the establishment of a township. The first election held in Oakland Park was on November 4, 1830, with John Cockerill as its first selectman. In 1834 the township changed its name to Jacksonville because it became part of the Seminole Nation under US Indian Agent Andrew Jackson's orders following his Creek Expedition into Florida that year. During Reconstruction (1868-1912) Jacksonville experienced significant growth due to waves of white migration from Illinois and other states during the period known as Reconstruction - although much African American settlement did not take place until after passage of the Civil Rights Act (1964). Oakland Park is a small town in St. Johns County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1892 by the developers of the Panama Canal Zone and has been designated a U.S. National Historical Landmark. The population was 1,324 as of the 2010 census. The town was named for Oakland, California, which then served as the terminus of a steamboat service connecting Tampa Bay with Jacksonville, Florida and points east via Mobile Bayou and Indian Key Strait.ridge Road ran through what is now downtown Oakland Park until it was rerouted to its present course in 1954 following an extensive renovation of Interstate 95 between Jacksonville and Tampa by US Route 40 (now State Road 10). In 1892 local ranchers acquired 4,000 acres (1 km2) of land south of present-day downtown Oakland Park from General Josiah Biddle Griggs on behalf of the United States government under the homesteading act. In 1923 they sold this land to John A. Leary who donated it to Fort Myers Municipal Airport Authority for use as airport property; Leary's donation remains part of city limits today. However, much attention has focused on developer George Sawaya's purchase from Leary in 1951 of 2 miles (3 km) northeastward along I-95 from what is now Fort Myers Beach Boulevard to his family's home at 324 Whitefish Avenue; this acquisition greatly enlarged Sawaya's existing corporate campus located there today within what had been Leary Aeronautics Corporation - one day prior to its merger into McDonnell Douglas Corporation that same year The first post office opened in 1925 and closed in 1927 due to financial difficulties caused by bad weather during those years; however, postal service continued until 1974 when all mail services were discontinued due to budget cuts made by then President Richard Nixon after he became president
