In the early 1800s, Oakland Park was a thriving community in the heart of Florida’s panhandle. The area was known for its fruit orchards and sandy beaches. In 1828, Major General Andrew Jackson purchased land in present-day Oakland Park and began to develop it into a large plantation town. By 1830, he had built over 100 homes and plantations here. Jackson’s plantation colony grew slowly due to lack of skilled labor and yellow fever outbreaks that struck the area frequently. However, by 1848, he had sold most of his holdings in Oakland Park and moved his wife and children to Mississippi where they continued to grow cotton and other crops. A group of developers led by J.P. Morgan bought Jackson’s remaining lands in1892 and began developing them into what is now downtown Oakland Park with many mansions still standing today. Theaters were built here such as the Coliseum Theatre which hosted popular shows like vaudeville during the 1920s before being torn down in the 1930s for development reasons.Oakland Park also became home to several hospitals including One Medical Plaza which opened in 1951 as one of America’s first pediatric hospitals . Many notable residents have lived in or been associated with this vibrant community including: Driggs Bankski (founder of First National Bank), Charlie Parker (pianist), Al Capone ( organized crime figure), Jackie Robinson ( Negro League baseball player) .

Oakland Park, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by Luther and Lillian Addams as a location for their new home that they were building on the old Key West estate of Major General John S. Woolridge and his wife Elizabeth Banks Woolridge. They named it after their paternal ancestor Oakland (1775–1828), an American Revolutionary War officer who fought under Washington at Yorktown and Fallen Timbers. In 1904, the Addamses donated land to the city of Jacksonville for use as a public park and playground. The park had an initial area of . In 1912, additional land was donated by Mrs. Addams which made up . In 1892, the first white settler in Oakland Park, Florida moved into the area. The land was purchased from the Seminole Indians by Captain George A. Walton and his wife Mary Alice Walton. They named their new home "Oakland Park" after their home in England. The Walton’s were among the earliest settlers in this area. In 1907, they donated land for a park that would eventually become known as Oakland Park State Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds were originally called "Walton's Landing" because it was near where Captian George A. Walton had landed on his trip to explore Florida's Gulf Coast in 1892. The name change came about because of how much land was given away for the park and how many times it was used. In 1912, changes were made to the fairgrounds when it became known as "Oakland Park". This included adding a large swimming pool, which became an important part of the fairgrounds legacy. In 1928, another major addition to the fairgrounds took place when a football stadium called Tiger Stadium was built onsite. It is still used today and has been featured in numerous national tournaments over the years including Super Bowls and World Cup games!
